Hey guys, I'm new to stropping. I've stropped knives on a leather belt with what seem to be good results after reading about it here. The real question is just as the thread title says. Does an edge have to be convex to get real stropping results? What if I sharpen on a stone or croc sticks then strop, is it worth it? Is it really doing anything? I guess it will always remove a wire edge whether convex or v-sharpened, just looking for some thoughts from you guys. I'm about to order the strop kit from Dale, that's what got me thinking.

Thanks in advance,
Frank

Yup, you can strop anything. You'll use a different angle for different edges, but a strop is a good thing to have.

Stropping after stones is great for getting rid of wire edges, i have sharpened ALOT of kitchen knives on stones since im a pro chef and stopping does a great job on even the toughest burrs and wire edges. If you have never stropped on hard felt look into it, its magical. One word of caution is you can roll and edge stropping on leather if the edge is thin enough, but you cant on felt.

straight razors are stropped for shaving.. my folders including slippies get stropped on a belt sander....

as said, AnyThing can be stropped, even the strop itself:D

Wether it's convex or a V bevel (flat) won't really be any different, there's just a little less room for error and it takes a little longer because you're polishing a larger surface area. With a convex on a strop, the point where it's rounded keeps most of it off the strop when stropping the edge, so it only works the edge; with a flat bevel you're going to be working on much more of the bevel at a time so it will take a a little longer.

I stropped my Izula to shaving and hair whittling sharp at the same 40 degree angle from the factory. Stropping is an awesome way to finish an edge. That kind of edge rarely stays on with use though.

Thanks for the replies guys. I know its kind of a dumb question, just didn't want to ruin any blades. I'm moving forward, worst case, I strop an edge dull and have to re-sharpen it ;) Thanks again.
