Well, the title pretty much says all:can a blade that has been cold blued be used safely to cut food? If not, what treatment would you suggest to protect a non-stainless blade from rust?
Thanks

A light coat of mayonaise, perhaps?

if i was you i'd spary some on a salad and let the wife try it forst.

The most common formula of cold blue has selenic acid in it as the active ingredient. Selenium itself is a heavy metal and poisonous, but the amount that would be transmitted to a person eating food prepared with a blued blade would be miniscule.

I sure wouldn't eat food that was cut with a knife that has been blued with the acid type of cold blue. It might not harm you at all, but the skull and cross bones on the bottle will keep me from doing so. Jeff

This is an issue with us at Running Dog since we use a lot of coated 1084...

Most coatings are not for food although the real problems will be minimal...Citric acid from fruit is one of the biggest consern...Many coating contain small amounts of heavy metals or poisonous acids...Will the acid in the food draw it out?

Nobody knows for sure...I don't think this subject really has been studied...I would like to see Benchmade or sombody with $$ go to a food safety chemist and do a study on this...

The coating we settled on is based on the resin used to line tomato soup cans...This good stuff, very tough...we have developed a special Running Dog formula without additional additives and no heavy metals...

I'm talking with the makers and I hope to see this product on the market for general use soon...
