You know, you can find just about anything on the internet. Some of it is true, some not. We know that SR77 is S7, SR101 is 52100. The Busse heat treat makes them perform better. Is INFI a modified A8 steel?

Yea. Give away the secret...

Right.

I'm sure the heat treat is proprietary or "secret", but INFI has to be made from some steel, unless it is made special just for Busse, which it may be for all I know. Just wondering if anyone on the forum knew.

It is indeed proprietary, and here is the composition;

V .36%
Cr 8.25%
Fe 87.79%
Co .95%
Ni .74%
Mo 1.3%
C .5%
N .11%

This question comes up pretty regularly.

The answer is no, INFI isn't A8.

I don't have links to the prior discussions.

Maybe someone does.

The elemental composition is floating around here somewhere. I've seen it posted.

Thanks, Jimmy. I figured somebody here on the Busse forum would know. The source I read may have incorrect information. I had never seen it or heard it before, so I was skeptical anyway. Whatever INFI is, it is amazing steel.

Infi:
V 0.36% Vanadium
Cr 8.25% Chromium
Fe 87.79% Iron
Co 0.95% Cobalt
Ni 0.74% Nickel
Mo 1.3% Molybdenum
C 0.5% Carbon
N 0.11% Nitrogen

A8:
Cr 4.75-5.50 Chromium
Ni 0.30 Nickel
Mo 1.15-1.65 molybdenum
C 0.50-0.60 Carbon
Mn 0.50 Manganese
Si 0.75-1.10 Silicon
W 1.00-1.50 Tungsten
Cu 0.25 Copper
P 0.03 Phosphorus
S 0.03 Sulfur

Thanks, Chris. Looks like INFI has more Chromium and even has Nitrogen. Those are not the same steels for sure.

Safe to say, INFI is INFI. It's not modified A8....modified A8 is A8. INFI is INFI. Chris Reeve's S30V isn't modified 440C....it's S30V. Unlike S30V, INFI is proprietary (you can find out the chemical composition, but that's not what makes it INFI). It's kind of pointless to ask about the secret aspects of it being that's what keeps us coming back for more. In the past, Jerry has sent/sold (I'm unsure of which) some INFI to other companies who made knives of it and treated it themselves only to find is wasn't really a super steel. The heat/cryo treatment that Jerry gives it is what makes it special (but I'm sure he's got some crazy way of explaining how the properties in the steel are perfect and exploited by his treatment.....but you can count on that to NEVER be done :)). It's easy to see what Jerry can do with other steels when you look at his old A2 knives and how wonderfully they perform. Not as good as INFI, but the next best thing. Compare HIS A2 with others and you'll be very impressed.

Safe to say, you'll not hear anything on the treatment of INFI and it's easy enough to find out the chemical composition so you've gotten about as much info as you'll get. Thats's as much as any of us have, and that's as much as Jerry would ever disclose being a business man ;).

My question has been answered already. And I'll ask any question I damn well please.

I'm not a Hog but I know a few and word I get is that the secret of Infi has something to do with the quenching of the blade in a quality single malt Scotch.

man, you might be from JAWJA but wheres the southern charm??

You may ask anything you like, but not sure if it'll get an answer in the future.:thumbdn:

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication. --from your sig

Well that might explain it, but its still no excuse!

Is is safe to say that SR77 is "modified" S7 and SR101 is "modified" 5200? I wasn't asking for proprietary secrets, only if A8 was the basis for INFI, which it apparently is not. I do not consider the question to be pointless in light of the other two Busse-made steels.
