Is it a knife or hatchet?

I made this thing 18 years ago. It looks more like a knife but is used more like a hatchet. It is made from a butcher axe/hatchet. The blade is shortened and reshaped, I made a new handle. It can be used as a knife, hatchet or chisel.

I usually carry around real hatchet or axe and few knives but sometimes I take with me only this »knifechet« and I can tell, it is very usable.

What do you think?

Beautiful, purposeful, practical, same applies to the sheath.

I would imagine that you would have a good amount of genuine orders were you ever to produce the type for limited sale.

Thanks for sharing the history and pictures, the fact that it looks so right proves that you are very skilled. Perfect name too.

Very nice work. Have thought of using a cleaver as a hatchet myself at times I have a few dexter ones. Saw a carbon steel rough forged cleaver at an Asian Market and thought it could be a project. I think it was 12.00. Did you totally rehandle it or just modify? Is the handle maple? What is the purpose of the screw on the handle? Are the small rings are for a carry strap over your shoulder or for lashing to your pack? Is it stainless? I can't remember seeing a stainless cleaver. Just curious about your nice work. 1. Totally rehandle. I want a handle with down curved pommel for more secure chopping.
2. Jes, it is maple .
3. The screw with a bolt goes through the pommel and make it not break.
4. yes, I carry my knifechet over a shoulder or in the rucksack.
5. It is stainless - it is made from a butcher hatchet.

Oh so it's a Knifechet now is it?
Very well Samek since you made you may name it.

Knifechet it is

It's a "tactical" cleaver. Looks like an excellent design. For me, it would be perfect if it didn't have the back edge.

Thanks for the answers. One more. How did you cut the slot for the handle and made it the same width down the wood, router? Loosearrow

Just my inexperienced opinion.I would consider it more of a knife/cleaver,since it lacks the traditional characteristics of a hatchet.

Overall very interesting design:thumbup:

Very nice. I'd call it more of a hatchet with multiple uses.

Samek,
Your knife/hatchet or knifechet looks very similar to my Golok Petok.
Different handle.
Same thinking. Front is sharp for a chisel as well.
I think I like yours better though.
Here is Valiant Co's picture of a Golok Petok

1. coarse shaping
2. two paralel cuts with a saw
3. excavate wood with 6 mm flat chisel
4. make holes
5. use epoxy glue
6. riveting
7. fine shaping
8. linseed oil

Looks almost along the lines of the Tracker knife used in the movie "The Hunted". Nice style. I'd buy one.
