So I'm reading this forum alot and finding that I want a custom hatchet, then perhaps I would like to restore a proper old axe. But I haven't zeroed in on exactly what I want.
So, in the meantime I picked up the finest hatchet that Sports Chalet has (StanSport, fiberglass handle, drop forged in Taiwan, $12) just to start getting some work done on my property that I would have otherwised utilized a saw for.
I get this thing home, take it out of the package and see that there simply isn't an edge to be found, the "blade" tapers down to about 1/4" and then just abruptly is ground straight in at about 45-degrees. It just bounces off the surface of any wood I've tried it on.
So I guess I'm looking at some reprofiling with a hand file. If I take her down to 25-30-degrees will I be ok? I don't plan on hitting any rocks or nails etc (I use a huge pakistan bowie for the real nasty work near rocks). Thanks
Scott
