is it even possible that illegal knives can become legal?

this is me thinking loud, and in writing. just sharing what's on my mind.

to me it seems like it isn't too hard for a type of knife to become illegal. if enough people (sheeple, is that what you call them?) have a bad opinion about a certain kind of knife, it may be a popular choice for politician to it illegal. I think arguments like "they are associated with gangs and other criminal, and have NO practical purpose!" are usable.

I don't know if a ban of certain types of knives is fast to make.

when the knife type is illegal, who the hell is ever going to bother to make it legal again? it doesn't seem like a big thing for a politician to do. has it ever happened?

I can understand why balistic/spetznas knives are illegal, at least I can't see how it may be used for peaceful task in a civilian life. do you?

We now have states where all or most knives are legal and local laws are pre-empted. In effect, this reverses previous illegality.

It isn't likely to become legal again. But recently it became legal to shoot with silencers in WA. It was legal to own one already but illegal to use it. I was surprised and happy about that. If a group worked towards legalizing the knives and got a politician to support the cause then it would happen.

"Assault looking" rifles became legal in California in only the past few years. Before you couldn't buy or own anything that made the list of looking like an assault rifle. AR15s and AK47s are now available. As are high capacity clips. So yeah, things can go the other way.

As stated NH and a few other states have changed their laws to allow all knives to be legal, and only their mis use to be illegal. The best is some states have made the state wide law the only allowable knife law, there by removing the many local restrictions that exisited before.

AZ is another that effectively reversed all bans on knives, and passed a preemption so that all local knife laws are now void. Effectively, if you're over 21 you can carry any knife you want in AZ, even switchblades or ballistic knives (the latter is not banned US-wide, contrary to popular belief. The Feds only have trade restrictions that makes them almost impossible to make or sell except in brick and mortar shops. That leaves the rest to state law.)
