Is it just me, or do these look a LITTLE too familiar?

Oh..Spencer Frazer at SOG is going to be PISSED when he catches wind of this, and I'm going to post a link of this at the SOG Forum!..

They ripped off SOG's switch pliers. They ripped off Gerbers Urban legend, phucking cheap ass stanley pricks

...And SOG's Pocket PowerPlier! (That's what's in the 2nd link posted above...The 1st link is to a rip-off of SOGs' SwitchPlier)..

Considering they both admit the first one is a patenteed action, I would guess one bought rights from other, or both bought rights from the same third party.

and one second one, don't see how it's a copy of an urbn legend, anymore than urban legend is copy of Leatherman. All similar multi tools, limit to how many ways you can make it. Plus the compound leverage can be a definite advantage, and is not something on the Urban legend.

Oh no, it's another "knock off" lynchin' git the rope, let's string em all up, let's lynch the first guy to beat two rocks together and copied someone elses sharp rock.

I know knock offs are wrong, and that it makes the real thing more expensive, but is this the place to star another smear campaign against someone before all the facts are known.

The lawyers get richer,(no slam intended, it's what pays your bills) and everyone jumps on the "let's trash someone bandwagon.

Now I'm done rantin', let the Holiday Festivities begin.

It would surprise me if a large company like Stanley with a legal department and a brand name to protect, would knowingly rip off someone's design. Before jumping to conclusions, let's get some facts.

I've seen this sort of thing before at my local hardware store with obviously Gerber-made tools. I'd guess that they are not just licensed but actually made for Stanley by SOG.

I recall that SOG have/had license some of their patented designs to other before. I think it was a Harley Davidson multitool that was in question before.

I noticed the similarities a long time ago when the Stanley line came out. They look a little too similar so I thought SOG was the OEM for Stanley. But then again, the implements are all different, and the steel is different (420?). Stanley is made by United Cutlery. Go figure.

If SOG is making them for Stanley, I'm gonna buy both the Stanleys at those prices! $10 for a SwitchPlier!

Bingo! This is very true. SOG has allowed a small number of other names put on their products (Stanley, Penn International, Harley Davidson, and Master Mechanic come to mind). Also look at the size of this "rip off" item. It is only 2 3/8" closed (the regular SwitchPlier's length is 4.2"). This is a key-chain sized item. Someone from China originally did rip off SOG's design and making it minature, but Spencer decided to capitalize on what they did and make it himself, allowing a "cheaper" name to reside on it.

BTW, SOG has nothing to do with the making of this mini version. They're only licensing it to be made.

Last I had heard the Stanley line of knives and such are made by United Cutlery.
I think I remember that's whose making the model in question here.

:footinmou...As usual.:D.

In Dann's support, Spencer IS very protective of his designs. Does he get "pissed" when he sees his design ripped off? No. But he will go to any measure to assure each instance is taken care of (legal and/or other).

And Keith: Since Dann is mutant (resulting from an experiment gone awry), he’ll need a three footed smilie! ;) [Sorry Dann! :p ]
