I just noticed im sitting here sharpening my new Bowie(11" Blade) and it just feels good. Im not sure why, im just happy because this thing is made out of S30V and im going to be doing it for a long while so im glad it makes me happy. How about you guys? Does it just feel great to sharpen big blades or what?

Personally I find it harder to sharpen the small ones :D. Granted it does not take as long, but for me a smaller blade means a smaller handle and less control in maintaining an angle. So keeping that in mind I have to agree that sharpening a big blade is much more fun :).

Well i just finished this one, took me about 1.5 hours total, started on a DMT fine grit 6X2 benchstone and then a ceramic 1200 grit stone and then a light stropping with some 9000 grit compound. I must say S30V will take a wicked edge, feels just as grippy as most carbon steels i have used. Its really great stuff(except it cost a arm and a leg). And as my bare left arm will tell you its shaving sharp!! I hope i dont have to tackle sharpening it again any time soon!! And BTW i do agree with gus, it was very easy to maintain the angle on the bowie, it has a big handle and i was able to get the angle perfect(i used a marker on the edge to make sure). It is much more mindless work that sharpening a small blade that has more curves and a smaller handle. With a small blade i find it takes much more concentration and skill to get a hair poping edge.

I love sharpenin' my EK Combat Bowie, and I don't know why but I can get a sharper edge on the EK than some of my smaller Hunters.
