Is it just me, or does something look somewhat off here?

(Link removed per the rules -- probably not hard to find if you search for a custom 5 on an auction site. Sorry for breaking the rules!)

I used to own a custom 6 way back when, and little subtle things here and there look off to me -- like the little ledge on the blade tang ramp that disallows full travel of the locking liner, as well as the jimping on the blade's thumb ramp.

Am I just seeing things?

ETA: It may well be a genuine 5, it just got my spider-senses tingling, that's all. No aspersions intended toward the country of sale, as I certainly realize originals and likenesses can come from anywhere.

Dude it says ships from China right in the listing... Lol

Well, I saw that, but didn't want to cast aspersions...

I wasn't looking to buy it, but stumbled across it while looking at custom pocket clips for my Super Roadie.

I think ships from China is a dead giveaway , why would a country notorious for counterfeiting be selling a genuine custom Emerson? Seems rather optimistic. If I'm spending 1000+ on any knife that's frequently counterfeited it better be from a reputable dealer right here in good old USA.

Hopefully no one gets duped into that sale..

Actually looks like a normal CQC5 to me. Remember these are customs so there will be slight variations in them. Especially since this is an older diamond logo one. I understand the concern because it is overseas, but there are thousands of collectors all around the world. I personally know of several in China. The Chinese have money just like we do and it spends just as well.

I think the biggest issue is poor photos washing out the jimping and casting a shadow on the tang. I don't see someone going to all the trouble to counterfeit a 5 and do things like dovetail the micarta into the bolsters but going cheap on the jimping when that is easier. Plus why pick the old diamond logo. It is not more valuable and some even think it is less desirable. Plus so few were made. If they went with the Specwar logo, no-one, not even Emerson could likely tell how many were made.

Interesting, my thoughts were the knife was made in the USA but shipping from China, a counterfeit capital of the world not worth the risk for 1850.00 IMO.

Although it is possible a wealthy Chinese person is selling a genuine custom Emerson.

At least PayPal would return the money if it turned out to be a fake.. I hope anyway.

Just the kind of education I was looking for on the variations. My old custom 6 was immaculately fit and finished in every respect, truly deserving of the price tag in my opinion. I was a dummy to sell it off in the late '90's/early 00's.

I was apprehensive about posting my OP, but feel like discussion of things like this are what BFC's all about. Judging by the other items for sale by that seller, it's probably the real deal. I like honey mustard on my crow sandwiches.

I saw nothing at all wrong with your post. You just weren't sure and were questioning the knife. In fact the way I see it, it is when we stop questioning things that we are in trouble.

^ Thank you, RJ. Even after a a few years here, I'm always learning. I see you've been around here a bit also. :thumb up:

If only I could stumble upon a custom 13 on the exchange...

That is interesting for sure. Looks real to me not that I have ever owned one, at least not yet. I wouldn't let craftsmanship fool you though. Take someone who knows about Emerson plus the opportunity and the ability to produce items and well...given the specific area of China too. Goodluck

*brings crow sandwiches w/ honey mustard* any thing else good sir?

I didn't mean to be abrasive , just rather side with be safe than sorry with my money and fellow bladeforums brothers money too.
