Does hardened steel just feel different? seems to feel a bit lighter and crisper..

Crex and I have had some conversations on that very topic. You can feel the differance. I think a lot of the cues are also the sound it makes as you handle it.

I've had the same sense. I don't know whether it's lighter but it sure feels "crisper" if there is such a word. :D And the sound definately changes when the steel is hardened. This is my first "did it take?" test... :D

I like to hand a hardened knife from a rubber band to test the harmomics. I've thought about for fun, incorporating a tuning fork into a full tang knife under the slabs. The vibrations would make it cut like a sonic laser :)

Yes, it does sound weird, feeling the difference in the steel, but I have to agree with you, the steel does feel different. Another example of "seeing" with your hands is when commercial fishing, you can "see" and tell what your basket and anchor ropes are hung up on, such as steel cable, stone or concrete, or wood. A very interesting thread, Mark.

And I thought I was the only fruitcake around here, but yes I have had he same feeling about hardened steel. It "feels" much different.

Crisper ? like lettuce ? I hope he isn't eating it .Vibrations will definitely be different.

I know what you're talking about. It may be psychological, but there is something about it....

Ever notice how a forged blade just feels like it has more compact grain than a stock removal blade?... ;)

touch it lightly to your tounge , now try the same with an unquenched piece

don't forget to let it cool down from the forge first ;)

Hmmmm.... you're right. There is something different. The quenched one tastes like oil. :barf: :D

LOL, I'm not falling for that one again Sweany. There was a time when we used our Paragon oven and for anyone here that knows how time consuming this can be we send blades to Suncoast Heat Treaters and the rockwell is always dead on. The "ting" in S30V is different than ATS-34. It ought to be...it cost more. :D Cavelady

I can tell the difference too....it is a soul thing...aint a knife before it is heattreated...
