I just read the law, and was wondering if it was legal to carry a fixed blade openly in MO. I was also wondering if it for sure is illegal to carry a fixed blade concealed.

Here is what the law says about concealed carry of a fixed blade, or rather doesn't say :P.

"Carries concealed upon or about his or her person a knife, a firearm, a blackjack or any other weapon readily capable of lethal use"

They have defined a knife as anything with a blade over 4 inches, as well as not being an "ordinary pocket knife", whatever that means.

Got quotes from here http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/mo.txt

If, a fixed blade is illegal to carry concealed, then i have been violating the law pretty regulary for at least a year.:o I think the concealed carry is on shaky ground so im going to stop that. However, if it is legal to carry a FB openly then I might start doing that. Though, I would do so as discreetly as possible.

Thanks for the imput, I hope my post is coherent.:)

i called my local police department in st. louis, and they said it's a concealed weapon if you have it on you or in your car. if You're taking it camping you can leave it in your trunk, but that's the end.

so if its carried openly its considered concealed? That doesnt make any sense.
Thanks for the reply.:)

According to the statute as posted, it would seem that open carry is permissable. If it's carried IWB with a dark or patterned shirt it won't be too noticable (most folks don't pay much attention to what's going on around them anyway). I'm assuming that any folding knife with under a 4" blade is lawful to carry concealed. If a longer folder is clipped to your front pocket -- and not covered with a shirt or jacket -- that probably is not considered concealed. Double check the statute and see if it says anything about daggers, gravity or inertia opened knives, switchblades, or vague language like "dangerous knife" or "of like kind."
