Is It Me, or Is This Wrong?

The pharmacy I am currently working in is right next to a university. This weekend was move in week for all of the dorm students at that university. That means it was about 10 times more busy than a normal weekend.

The girl who usually works on Sunday couldn't work, so the only other girl that works weekends was asked. She said no. She also just started there maybe a month or two ago. So that left me alone with the pharmacist, who isn't really able to do her own work anyway, and the manager. The thing that really pissed me off was that this girl show up to spend like an hour shopping around. Now maybe it is just me, but if I told my boss, who recently hired me, that I couldn't help out in a jam, I wouldn't show my face during the time I said I wasn't available.

Now I will admit that I really don't like the girl anyway, as she is just a horrid worker and seems to have no common sense. So I would appreciate an unbiased second opinion. Am I being overly harsh here, or would you agree that it is wrong to work like that?

If I were taking a "sick" say or whatever, I'd keep a low profile, and I sure as hell wouldn't go to my place of work for recreational purposes on that day.

That girl isn't a team-player. She needs to be kicked to the curb. Feel-free to tell the manager that I said that.:).

I second that. If you call in sick or tell the boss you won't be working, it's not a real bright idea to show up at work to shop IMHO. She sounds like she needs to be looking for a new job.

If the two of them had any sense, they would have made a point of being there for that especially rough weekend, if only to show that they are reliable, and can be counted on when there's a real problem. As a (former) boss, I know this was one good way for my employees to earn a lot of respect from me. The day comes when that kind of employee needs a favor, and wonders why it's always "no, just no."

What makes me even more pissed off is that usually the store is pretty dead, as in losing money everyday. On the times that I have worked Saturday morning cashier shifts (not my job, but I do it when asked) I am usually able to read Saturday's newspaper plus the parts we get early for Sunday. Nobody has a problem with that because it really is that slow, just as long as you are aware of the customers and make helpding them come first. So on the few times when it actually gets busy I feel you really need to work to make up for all the times you got paid to take it easy.

Honestly I wish everyday was like today. I mean we were busy enough that I worked a full day without time to take a break. To me that is much easier than a five hour shift with a break, but no work to do. I probably would have liked it even more if there was actually a cashier there too, as I could have been running between the pharmacy and the front counter, and stopping to straighten up the store in between.

I think that your great work ethic will allow you to keep working at that pharmacy as long as you want the position, and long after you forget what those girls' names are, and what they look like.

This sounds like the kind of employee that I have big problems with at my job. They can never stay late to help out if needed, can't come in on days off if asked, and always ask to leave early and whine about it. Then they complain that they're not getting enough hours.

I got 14 hours of overtime this week. I'll probably get even more next week.

Wow! She had the stones to come in and shop for an hour when she said she couldn't work? I'd have walked up to her and fired her on the spot! Whatta worthless work-ethic-less (is that a word?) piece of crap. The boss should be told of the circumstances in as neutral tone as possible. He/she should talk to the employee, telling her why she is being fired... maybe it will benefit her next employer.

I have a feeling she won't be there that much longer.... sounds flakey and will either get herself fired or will just move onto another job or will stop showing up altogether....OR she will end up getting promoted and really tick you off.

Well, to be fair (or at least, less presumptive), perhaps part of the reason she couldn't work was because she needed shopping done. Maybe she had other plans in addition to shopping. And you can't really force somebody to work on a schedueled day off. OTOH, an employee displaying that kind of attitude isn't the kind that should expect leniency from management, or priority for requested time off, and the like.

I have a kind of contridictory duality with my employer. On one hand, I don't really give a damn about my company; I work for myself. I work to the best of my ability, they pay me for it, end of story. On the other hand, being a "team player" shows good work ethic (even with my "all for me" attitude), and I find it hard to be a dick about that sort of thing. Plus, being a "team player" puts you in a better light with superiors, and it's easier to get benifits like dictating your own scheduel or requesting specific days off. And of course it makes relations better. Finally, even though I might not care less about how much profit my employers make, many of my coworkers I consider friends, and at the very least would want to help them out, if not the company.

That is more along the lines of what I am really feeling. In such a small place like where I am working (five employee's not counting managers or pharmacists), if you are smart you really better be careful when asked to help put. Now the next time this girl wants to take some time when she would normally be working, who would want to cover her shift? I mean if you can't (or won't) help out when needed just be smart enough not to show up at work, when you said you couldn't.

Mongo, I have already talked with the manager about her a few times. I don't mince words either, and could in no way be seen as trying to be be neutral. He agrees with me 100% so we have no problems.

Actually I would have been up for a promotion if I weren't planning on leaving as soon as I find another job. I just finished college, and am looking for a job in the computer field. All the managers and partners know it, and have no problem with it, in fact they regularly ask how it is going and if they could help. This girl, fortunately, will be on her way out the door before long.

When I was running a pizza shop, the main baker called in sick one day... Then showed up at the sister store in the neighboring town! The sad, really sad thing was that he bragged to the people over there why he was there! Moron. I fired him, then listened to him whine when he called me up. Nobody liked him anyway. If he would have been half-way decent, I'd have kept him, bacause i had to cover his position.

was at my last job for 2.5yrs...(actually 2yrs, 5 months, on the day)

35 full time employees, 5 part time, and 4 managers(actually, location manager, sales manager, shipper and secretary, though they all tried to run the place)... 12 of us white.

Now, as a general rule, I hate people. Doesn't matter what race, religion, sex, age... I just hate em all. Got along with the philipinos, got along with the boss. Shipper hated me since day 1 b/c I didn't take any sh*t from him, sales manager hated me b/c he couldn't order me around as I'd take my directions from the boss.

I'd work with whoever they put me with, push till the job was done, and slack off till he gave me more work. Quite often this meant pushing for 7hrs and then taking all my breaks at the end of my shift.

other ppl would see me sitting around for an hour, do it and get fired. Favorite trick was not taking a break monday-thursday and sitting around for 5hrs on friday and getting paid for it(or working overtime monday-thursday and either getting the day off as paid time or only having a 3 week work month with 160hrs.

Usually you could get 2-3 days without saying anything to the boss at all. Miss 5 in a row without a call and you can pick up your paycheck.

Loved working my *ss off with 14-15hr shifts, letting the boss know that I was using built up hours for a 2-3 day holiday(5 day weekends all the time), and showing up to harass the ppl who went slow all week then had to bust thier a*ses to cover my work during my holiday. p*ssed them right off.

and yet my final review stated that I was a great employee with great work ethic and team spirit.

Taken a month off to relax(week left of this) and then going back to school on sept 6th. Already know that in a couple months when I want spending money, my job is waiting for me for however many hours I want to work. :p
