Is it normal for folding knives to develop side to side play after many cycles of opening and closing if one isn't using loctite?
specifically my strider smf, i don't use loctite but after awhile it starts to develop side to side play. all i have to do is slightly tighten the pivot and then its fine for another bunch of cycles of opening/closing. anyone?

Yup, completely normal:thumbup: happens with all knives (if you open and close them over and over:D then again I'm not really one to talk...)

Yeah i have a couple that did that i picked up some purple loctite for it. Purple isnt as strong as blue but keeps things in place decent enough

Yes. I actually had to add purple loctite on one f mine this evening. No side to side but a bit too easy to open and close.

great guys thanks, thats good to hear..happy to hear my strider is all good an normal:D

I saw the thread and all I could this was "It's not unusual" by Tom Jones. It is not unusual for knives to develop a small amount of lateral play. Many of my users have a little. I prefer a loser pivot for easier deployment, though.

I can tell you not to over use the locktite. I just did this last night, made the blade not open or close at all. Lucky I only put it on for an hour, took pivot screw out and took all the locktite off. After a hundred or so openings and closings it's fine, but I definately put to much on.

yes this is normal. I use the blue locktite and like the above poster stated you literally need to use a very small drop.

I have been using Vibra-tite VC3 on my pivots lately (thanks to a Bladeforums thread) and I prefer it's adjustibility over regular loctite. Give it a try.

I heard you could use teflon tape instead of locktite, I haven't tried it but I will soon.

Its a lot easier to use, less messy, and less permanent.

Can you point me in the direction of that thread?

It was only mentioned in passing. Vibratite is an adjustable thread locker. That's it. Just buy some, follow the directions, and keep your loctite for jobs where adjustability isn't needed.

I've used it and I didn't like it. Yes, it keeps the pivot from completely unscrewing but it does not hold the pivot precisely where you put it. I mean it is Teflon... that stuff is meant to be slippery, not for holding something securely.

That's true, I guess I need to try out locktite, my skyline doesn't want to stay put.
