Hi,

I bought a 30-inch Japanese Katana from Hong Kong and the seller was going to ship it by EMS. But the carrier told him the US Customs may not admit such a long knife. Could anyone tell me the corresponding regulations or did anyone have similar experience? Thanks a lot.

i dont know customs procedures, but i would think if it is declared as "really long sword" it will draw suspicions.

when i have sent to canada or australia, i declare knives as camping equipment or a similar inocuous item.

Wow, I am surprised the seller does not know how to ship swords to the US. Have they not dealt in many swords or transactions to the states?

I know on Ebay, sellers usually list "Ships to:" locations to weed out buyers in locations they know they have had issues shipping to in the past.

The seller was not a dealer. He was selling his collections and this is the first time he shipped such a long knife to the states. Mark, thanks for your suggestion. I let the knife declared as the gardening tool:)
