I'm looking for a traditional, wood handled, carbon steel lockback. Is there anything like that out there? I was thinking something in the 30-60 USD range. I've seen plastic handles and stag (I think) but I'm not a fan of those and I love the Kissing Crane MULE but it's a slippie. Not that thats a bad thing, I just would like to have a lockback. I'm posting here because I know you guys would know and I'm thinking of it as a pair with a fixed blade for bushcraft and such. Thanks in advance.

There is a birdseye maple Queen Mountain Man on ebay for fifty somethingish. I can't remember if its carbon though.

Fiddleback beat me to it. That was the exact knife I had in mind also:thumbup: I used the Queen MM in 1095 for a season. Great knife.

Edited to add...... I think the Queen on Birdseye mable is D2 steel.

About how thick is the handle on the Opinel? I've always wondered about it it just looks like it'd be really fat in the pocket. Would you have any pics of it compared to another folder like a Delica or Grippie?

I EDC an Opinel #8 with great affection. and have for years.

Opinels are good. Good steel, simple design, convex. And they're cheap enough to mod them without worry of ruining an expensive knife.

Here's a scan just for you, comparing four popular Opinel sizes to three popular plastic-handled knives:

Plastics from left to right: AG Russell Featherlite, Spyderco Endura, Benchmade 551 Griptilian
Opinels from left to right: #10, #9, #8, #6

Hope this helps you decide!

My own EDC Opinel is a #9, although I'd actually prefer a #8 - less bulky and fits my hand size better.

Among the plastic-handled knives, my #1 choice for hiking would be the AG Russell because of the slender profile and very light weight. The Benchmade is the smoothest action of the three.

I carry an opinel #10 , its a nice size and I can hide it in my hand ( knife closed of course )

and an Okapi 907e

both are carbon steel blades , wood handles , locking knives .

I have an opinel #12 my wife bought me , its great but definitely a belt carry , its a bit awkward to sit on .... and in reality its a folding kitchen knife , the Opinels thin blades are awesome slicers , but a big thin blade is also easy to buggar up .
