Is it possible for blade upgrade?

I've read many spydernuts asking for a better blade steel, e.g., nativeII. And Sal has explained for many times that those are results of balancing cost and performance considering the normal users in the big market. I totally agree with that.

I used to own a Buck560, and had its 420HC blade upgraded to BG-42 at Buck custom shop. The result is more than satisfying and many call it a "Buckbenza".

I think it might be a good idea if spyderco will also provide such blade-upgrade services. At a reasonable cost, many forumies will happily go get a SS Delica/Native and replace the blades with the lightweights' VG-10 blades.

I think Sal explained somewhere that it is not cost effective to pry open the pivots on the Delicas and replace the blade. At least I think I remember reading it :) . What I dont' understand is how come spyderco isn't offering stainless stell delica with VG10 blades but is offering carbon fibre versions. They must cost about the same, no? IMO, the stainless are heavy and too slippery for field use. For urban use, they're really nice.

Hi Spyken. Cost is the issue. The CF Delic is an expensive knife. The additional cost of the VG-10 would not prooportionally add that much.

The blades between the SS DElica and FRN Delica are not interchangeble.

Making the SS Delica in VG-10 would change the price point considerably. To do that for the small number of people that want the better steel at this time is not practical. SS Delicas sell well with AUS-6 and always have. Often times the forumites are just too small of a number to make a special production for.

I don't think the majority of the "Big market" would know the difference in steels.

yes, I think it's true - I tried selling my Delica VG10 in the aftermarket in Singapore, and people were telling me their 420 knives were just as good and they needn't pay so much for some so-called better steel. sigh.
