Is it possible to add a custom choil to a folder + other modifications?

I've got a BM 943 and I love everything about it. I've had sold plenty of knives, paramilitary 2, zt350, even a sebenza, due to the fact that nothing has been able to replace this little guy as my EDC knife. The only problem I have with it is I'm a little scared to use it for a little more heavy work due to the lack of choil. I was going to send the knife in benchmade for a sharpening, but that got me thinking, is there anywhere I can send it to get it sharpened and to get a little bit of custom work done on it? I'd want a choil on top of the blade, it'd probably be easiest right above the thumb stud. I'm also thinking a little cutout on the blade for my index finger in case it slips forward would be awesome to have, but I'm not sure about it so I'd like some second opinions. Something that doesn't eliminate a lot of blade length, but enough to save a finger cut.. I feel like the blade choil would be pretty simple, not sure about the bottom cutout. Can I get some thoughts on if this is possible, if its a good idea, and who I could contact?

Here is a picture of something similar to what I'm looking for (the choil pattern on the right for more traction, and the cutout on the bottom of the blade)

Thanks in advance!

The choil is actually what you referred to as the "cutout" in the bottom of the blade. The "choil" on the top of the blade, as you called it, is called jimping (fancy word for notches). Just figured I'd clarify so you don't wind up with a choil on the top of your knife. :D That being said, I'm sure you could contact a variety of knife makers/modders who would add jimping and a choil for a fee- probably wouldn't be much though. One person who comes to mind is tuffthumbz. I'm sure he could do it for you.

Personally, I would just by a knife with a "choil" as there are many available, Cold Steel, Spyderco, Strider to name a few. However, it can be done on your 940. Check with Charlie Mike here on the forum. I'm sure he could help you out.

rskmk1fullMOD.jpgwhat you might want to do is get a photo off the net of a 943, then edit it using Paint to try to see what the mods you are wanting would actually look like. You need to make sure that what you are wanting can be done without weakening the knife too much. Example: here's a BM Grip I did that with to see how it would look with a choil.
If all you mean is jimping then you could do that with a small file and continue the jimping that is already on the back of the liners across the aluminum handle scales. You could duplicate that on the front as well, where your index finger would grasp the handle. BUT once you file the aluminum you will remove the colored anodizing, so you would need to have it re-anodized, or if the handles are black you could just buy some Aluma-black solution and color it yourself. It helps to heat the metal a bit before putting the solution onto the metal.
