Is it possible to add a D-Guard?

I am a Civil War re-enactor, and I am looking for a combat knife. All things considered, the 14" Old Hickory will best suit my interest. Now for my main question; how would it be possible to make a D-Guard mod to this knife? On its own, it is period accurate, but the guard would be icing on the cake. Or rather, hard tack. (Nasty stuff). I know a man who might make me a sheath for it, so it is the question of the mod. Help or suggestions?

Given the overwhelming response I got here, I might have to :D
Thanks for the advice.

Sargent was talking to the troops after roll call. Said "Ya know boys, I was eatin' some hard tack fir breakfast this mornin' and bit into something soft! Know what it was?!?"
One of the privates yells out "A worm?!?"
Sargent says "No, by God, it was a ten penny nail!"

(true story)

I agree, hard tack is nasty.

^+1

It is way better dipped in coffee or fried in bacon grease, but there is a limit as to how good it can get.

I know I made a suggestion earlier in this thread to you about what to do but if it's " period accurate " like you said... personally I'd take it as it is.

I love that you guys got involved. I don't know what I was up to when this was posted, but I didn't see it the first time through.
