Is it possible to add material to the tang under a paracord wrap?

I'm working on my first knife project: repurposing an old knife into something more to my current tastes. I'm planning on buying one like this from a maker in the next year or so, and I want to test-drive this style of carry for a while first. My main goal here is to make a cheap and functional mock-up that will last as a "get-ya-by" for at least a year.

So far I've just removed the old scales, and am playing around with different cord wraps. Is there a material that I could glue onto the tang that would make it a touch taller and longer before the cord wrap?

I've thought about just rough cutting some sheet metal and gluing it on with JB Weld, regrinding the handle to the shape I want, and then spray painting it before the wrap to keep it from rusting.

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks.

You can also do a layer of paracord as an underlay, then a Japanese (or Mongolian, in the case of the wrap I do :D ) type wrap for the overlay. I leave the core in the paracord for the underlay, then strip it out of the overlay to keep it a little flatter.

Stingray skin, snake skin, frog skin...
