is it possible to solder or braze/weld a metal knife coating?

im still in the very beginning stages of becomeing a welder, i still need another semester before i can take the certification coarses, and i have a metallurgy book that i'll eventaully start digging into... but, for the time being i'll ask you guys about this since i dont have near enough tech knowledge to answer it myself :D

is it possible to create a melted, or welded plate coating on a knife without damaging its temper/hardening, or, be able to harden and temper it once the place/coating is in place?

just an example, if you could find something that would solder at temps below 350 degree's, you could iether layer beads across the surface, or coat the surface and then heat it up to melt it on...

i dont even know if anything like that is possible, but if it was, it would seem like it would far surpass any of the current powder coats ability to maintain under heavy abrasion

my only requirements for the coating are that it has to be more stain resistent then the knife steel, cant detrimentally effect the knifes heat treating (or ability to be heat treated), and that it has to be soft enough to both bend with the knife, and not chip, but not soft enough that it can be scratched off with your finger.....

seems like a pipe dream, but you never know unless you ask :D

any thoughts?

I don't know of any that could be applied with normal welding but there might be some applied with plasma deposition or other high tech methods.

Anything metallic that would melt at 350 would not be durable. The baked finishes from Brownell's are pretty tough.

i have a similar question. how do they inlaw blades with gold and silver? i was thinking about dremeling a design into a blade, brazing the design, sand the blade, ht,and do the finish. does any1 think this will work? any1 got a better method?

That can work sometimes, try it on a scrap and see if you like it.Mainly it is done by engraving an inverted channel in the steel and hammering in the gold.It takes quite a bit of skill and equipment to do it well.Look at some of Warenski's knives.
