Is it possible ...?

Not sure if this should be here or in shop talk so if a mod feels impelled to move it, feel free.

I've been thinking that a folding knife, maybe similar to a Buck 110, could look really nice with a bronze coloured blade, with appropriate handle and bolster materials of course. Now, obviously, bronze is not exactly premium blade material as far as hardness and so on goes but I'm wondering if a suitably hard coating that looked like bronze would be possible.

Yeah, yeah, I know, sounds like I've been drinking a little too much but I'd be interested to know if anyone else has thought of this or if maybe somebody has already done it.

Any thoughts or comments welcome.

At one time Buck had an ion fusion process for some of their blades that left them looking like gold. I imagine almost any color could be developed. Blades of actual bronze could be made hard enough to serve for some purposes. If it was good enough for Hector and Achilles ...

Hector and Achilles. Ancient warriors who lived in the northern hemisphere. Celebrated in the stories of the Trojan War. It took place a long time ago in the same part of the world as Gallipoli.

TiN or possible AlTiN might do the job ... a bronzelike look. And they're fairly tough coatings. Done properly, they won't be too brittle.

Just a thought.

Yeah, I know, I think I was there.

That Helen wasn't so hot!

You could try a Beryllium-Bronze alloy. That would be more suitable for a blade. I've no idea what it would cost.

I've used it ... for some peculiar applications.

Beat me to it, chief.

But not too many folks want to fuss with anything containing Berylium these days if at all possible. It has toxicity issues in grinding and forming.

Maybe a type of San Mai could be done by laminating a nice steel with bronze... just an idea.

Definitely true.

Not so much when alloyed ... but I'm sure there are a good set of practices that can be used to make it safe.

Honestly cannot remember, but I think I've seen a bronze shortsword that turned out to be Be-Bronze (I asked the maker).

All I can say for sure is that we are not being alloyed to spec out ANY parts made from ANY alloy containing Beryllium.
