Is it still safe to travel to Nepal?

Hi all,

It' sbeen a while since I dropped by the forum... my wife and I are planning a 4 week trip to Nepal for Oct/Nov this year and saw a few threads about some serious Maoist uprisings...

We're planning to do some trekking (Anapurna region mostly) and I personally would love to visit the kamis and of course, pick up a HI kukri from the source!

So, is it safe to book or are there very real security concerns?

BTw - I am at the bottom of the world in NZ and I haven't heard any news about the situation in Nepal at all!

Thanks,

Before you travel you'll need to find out where the hot-spots are in Nepal. There is a real war going on over there. I would also consult local travel agents, your government, and Uncle Bill.

The US government issues statements and warnings about places around the world.. I would check this as well. Nepali people seem to be very friendly.. and tourism is a big business there.. but times are tough and violent. If it was me, I would scrub the trip for now.

I wouldn't put a downpayment on that trip yet. There is a real possibility of a major nuclear war errupting between India and Pakistan. Things have gotten much worse as this afternoon. I for one would not want to be anywhere near there.

Plan, but wait and watch before you commit.

The latest State Department travel warning I read said advice to US Citizens was NOT to travel outside the Kathmandu Valley IF they decided to come to Nepal. General advice was postpone your journey here unless absolutely necessary.

I'd wait. There's a hotbed of Maoists just north of Pokhara. Gelbu was there just a couple of weeks back. Didn't run into personal trouble but said the area was "iffy".

Thanks guys - the last thing I want is a civil war erupting around me... now I better come up with another place to go!

I was so looking forward to visiting the kamis at the forge...:(

If the situation is not improved by Christmas I'm going to think hard and long before I get on the plane.
