Is it worth it?

So I was in a local hardware store yesterday, and I came across their knife case. Inside there was what appears to be a 105 Pathfinder, and a 116 Caper for sale. He had them priced at $25.00 each, the only catch is, they didn't have their sheaths. They had been lost over the years. Both are in great shape, as I'm pretty sure they've both been in a display case for the past 10 years or so. I guess my question is, is it worth it to pick them up for the collection and buying sheaths separate, or am I better off waiting to find examples that have sheaths?

Well STD,

That is your call. You can go and get them for me I'll send you the $50 + shipping and I'll give them a great home! Again, it's your call;).

Other than special editions, the 116 Caper's last catalog appearance was in 1991.

jb4570,

It's very tempting, though I have to admit the 105 is one model I've been looking at for myself.

DeSotoSky,

Good to know. I remember seeing the same knives in there over the years, but I go there so infrequently, that I never really noticed how long they had been there. I'm pretty sure that 105 is probably the same vintage as well.

$25 is an ok price for the knives but you may have a hard time finding sheaths for them, and when you do, you may have to pay close to the price you paid for the knives. I'd Pass...

Has this store been around a long time?

Check the tang stamps. The knives might be older than you think and thus valuable.

He may have some extra old sheaths laying around with no knives. He may be willing to throw in a couple of wrong sheaths that you could trade for the right ones or sell. Some old and rare sheaths are worth more than the knives. Old boxes can be valuable and he may have some he was just going to throw away.

He may have other old stuff. He may even sell his display case reasonable.

Ask him if he knows any retired Buck salesmen.

Always ask. It can't hurt and it could get you some good stuff.

:)

If I were you I'd run, not walk, back there and get them both. I'd say the caper is worth the price asked for both. Worry about sheaths later.

+3 :thumbup: I was thinking the same thing! Those 116 are not too common. I would check the tang stamps before buying however, to see exactly how good the deal is.

Ditto +4. I was offered a 116 mint in the box by a Buck salesman for over 100.00 so 25 for one w/o the sheath is one I'd be all over in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the advice guys. I probably wont be able to get back there until the middle of the week, but if I pick them up,you all will be the first to know.

Yes, those 116's have gone up. Not too long ago I gave 60$ for a first year date 116 in excellant condition without the correct sheath and thought it was a good deal. DM
