Is it worth saving a 1x30 belt sander and trying to make it variable speed?

I have an Dremel brand 1x30 belt sander. I am wondering if there is a straightforward method to turn it into a variable speed machine? I have grown to like finishing off the sharpening process by using a leather belt--but right now I only have one on my 1x42 machine which is a Burr King that also runs @ 3450 rpms. I can convert my Burr King to variable speed, but it will run around $1,100 and it doesn't even have a platen. So I've been thinking I would save that money towards a new TW-90. All that said if I could get a controller of some sort to make my little Dremel belt machine into a VS I would do that and keep it around for finishing off sharpening.

Thanks for any input/advice.

Is the motor on your dremel one with carbon brushes? If so your could simply install a rheostat switch or controller. Frank

Yes.
If it has carbon brushes it will have two positions opposite each other that will be Baklite or something similar. They each will have a slot for screw driver removal. If you have a regular dremel or rotary grinder, they will also have these carbon brush ports. Frank

I will investigate it, I know my Craftsman style dremel has these, I don't think this sander does, but I will inspect it tonight.

i have a feelig the 1x30 with have a std ac motor and thta its jsut a rebranded delta/crapsmen chicom tool
99% of the time putting $ into these cheap tools is $ wasted

butcher_block, I think you are right, it doesn't have the carbon brushes that Frank asked about, and I feel you are correct about it's origin, it actually came from Sears back in the day--approx. 14 years ago, it's just had pretty low hours on it, and I would like to make it variable speed if reasonably feasible.
