I have a Benchmade 710 in 154cm (couldn't resist getting one after seeing WadeF's videos) and had a question. I notice when it is opened that there is a little bit of blade play both up/down and left/right. It is very minute. Is this normal? Any information is grealy appreciated!

Thanks!!!!

How much is "minute"?

Does the blade wobble when you cut? Or does it only move when you really grab it and work at moving it?

Side to side or horizontal blade play can be adjusted by adjusting the pivot screw, should be a #10 torx. Up and down play you should not have at all. Try applying a little lube to the lock area and do some flicking to see if it settles in. If it does not settle in soon send it back to BM for Warranty Service.

I got a couple of blades that, if I grab them and work at it hard enough, I can move the blade a little tiny bit. (Got others that don't move any.) I don't consider that objectionable. If I had a folder whose blade moved in the least while cutting, I would send it back or scrap it, depending on the cost of the knife.

In the end, the knife has to please you. Benchmade is pretty good about this sort of thing. If it bothers you, send it in and have them look at it.

On my 710, if I open it "softly" there can be a minute amount of play up and down. However, this play disappears if I work the blade up and down -- the Axiz bar then moves forward to take up the slack. You can adjust out side to side play. Mine has absolutely no side to side play yet when I hold the lock back, the blade will drop out on its own weight. That's the result of fiddling with it for a few minutes. You need a torx wrench to do it. Can't recall the size at the moment. #10?

Even if you grab the blade and try moving it up and down? Not even a little play?

Yeah, sometimes you need to adjust the pivot. The nice thing with Benchmades is you can actually do some modifications on them, where other knives are riveted together and you get what you get. You can tighten the pivot on the 710 to reduce play, tighten it more to prevent the blade from flipping open to easily (If you're afraid of having a gravity knfe), or losen it to allow the blade to swing open like a gravity knife while still not having blade play.

I always clean out and re-lube my knives to improve their performance and re-adjust the pivot as needed.

I went back last night and re-checked this. If you grab the blade and yank it up and down really hard, there's a barely perceptible amount of movement. It's so slight that I'm not sure you can even call it "play." I doubt it's anything to worry about.

I have horizontal blade play too. When it gets to the point that I can't stand it anymore, or if it becomes dangerous to me, I'll send it to the Oregon Spa.
