Is My Dream SAK Out There?

Hi all,

I have a few SAKs in my EDC rotation, but I'm still looking for the perfect one. It seems no current models have all my must-have features without the bulk I don't want. (Picky, I know.) Is there an older model I'm missing or another solution (like a custom SAK)?? I'm up for anything of any brand...

Must haves:
  • Larger blade, around 3" or so
  • Nail file (er, nail maintenance tool)
  • Scissors
  • Bottle opener
  • Toothpick (would be nice to have)

I don't want:
  • A corkscrew
  • Anything too bulky, thick or heavy for light-duty EDC

The closest I've come:

Is my dream SAK out there? :D

check http://sakselector.info It lets you pick the features you are looking for in a SAK. I don't think it will let you exclude certain tools but it will show you all the tools with scissors, toothpick, large blade, nail file and bottle opener as well as other features like the number of tool layers.

also The wenger evo 16 meets all of your requirements.

Ask Scott at knifecooperative.com. He can put one together with whatever tools you want. If you use the multi purpose hook with nail file you could fit all that into two layers.

Go over to SOSAK (www.sosakonline.com) and find a guy by the nickname of "Scibeer." He lives out in CA and puts together custom SAKs. I have a Vic Farmer that he added scissors to, making it my "perfect" EDC SAK.

The Leatherman CS Style has it all except tweezers instead of a toothpick. (If you're hardcore you can use the knife to pick teeths though :D)

Sadly Bill (Scibeer) recently confirmed his retirement from commercial SAK modding. I too have one of his Farmer+scissor mods and it's excellent. Luckily there are other modders out there now capable of doing the same level of work.

A "Dream SAK" might be impossible because dreams change. Once I had a perfect SAK model and was very happy with it until one day, after many years of good use, I began to think it lacked some implements I wanted and had a lot of stuff I never use. I never used to feel that way. Same SAK, but different guy. Things had changed for me over the years, and my life style was much different than during the time I thought my earlier SAK was ideal. Other models were more in keeping with my new realities. You might want to amend your search to a "Dream (for now) SAK." Good wishes.

Thanks for the recommendations and links, all. I learned about a LOT of options I didn't know existed. I did buy a Wenger EVO 16 (not the EvoGrip model)...it's nice, if a little thick. So perhaps my requirements have changed...I wish it was a one-handed opener. :-) Maybe it is the journey and not the destination.

I think there may be a few others in my future...

I think a lot of us have found it hard to satisfy all our requirements with just one SAK. Now, your original requirements plus your new wish for one-hand opening can easily be satisfied by choosing one knife from each of these two lists:

1) Vic Classic; Vic Rambler; Vic Ambassador; Wenger Esquire .....

2) Vic OHT; Vic 111mm Soldier .....

You get the idea and here's a link to help you choose: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Knife+List ..... Scroll down and click away! ;)
