i was setting up my kiln the other day for the cpm 154-cm heat treat and i set it up for 1450 degrees hold 10 mins then ramp full speed to 1950 degrees and from 1450 degrees to 1950 degrees it took 30-35 mins just to get to 1950. is this to slow for cpm 154cm? i know that it is supposed to be kind of a fast ramp.

or is it ok?

No It's fine, just as long as you don't overheat.Taking a while to get there is OK.

Skip the preheat and put your blades in when the furnace reaches the Austenitizing temperature. Give them 5 minutes to come up to temperature, then start your soak time.

I think skipping the preheat is not allowing the steel to reach it's full potential. Time and Temperature is important... especially in highly alloyed steels. Odd little fellows in lab coats did all that boring scientific work so we could make better knives.

In case anybody missed it, a great thread here explains why.

I would also use anti scale or a foil pack to prevent decarb on the steel. My 18 inch even heat 120v kiln took four hours to reach 1850, but it had a 25 pound H13 hammer die in it. 35 mins to get to temp is not an issue at all.

i will be using 2100 degree tool wrap :)

What is the difference between 9999F/hr or Full?.... I use "Full" should I not?

well for my paragon kiln 9999 is full, it is the fastest that the kiln will heat up. i dont know what type of kiln you use it may be different on yours.

Some controllers have 9999 as the fastest rate, and others have FULL....same thing.

Ha!.... I read it as if you were saying 9999 OR FULL.... as if they were different settings that accomplish different results..
