this is a weird question and i dont know if anyone could help.
i have a benchmade mini reflx w/ a black blade. the blade is flatground.
i got this little auto about 5 months ago. i was sharpening it last night using a caorse hone and a " razors edge guide" and could bring up a burr but somithing just dident feel right. i showed it to bettey and she noticed someting odd.
on the relief edge of the blade there are 2 lines of raised steel. i spent an hour and a half grinding this one side and they are still there. here is a messed up illistration:

O.K. it'd not a good illistration and it's a bit exgaggerated but i hope you get the pic.
it seems like steel was folded to make the blade and it's microscopicly delaminating. it know this is a total tweeker question but what's the deal with this knife? i bought used from someone on blade forum. maybe he did something to mess it up but i cant seem to grind the problem away. it's a solid little knife w/ amazing lock up and i dont really care for b.m. knives.
and it would seem i should be able to grind it down but i will hone and hone and hone , get a gnarley burr ,and the two grooves are still there. they run from a half in. from the heel to about a 1/4 in from the tip. almost the whole lenghth of the blade.
does anybody have any idea?
p.s. i cant seem to get the illistration to work.....

I just wanted to let you know that I read your post but can't make heads or tails from your description. For example, I'm not sure what you mean by the "relief edge" of the blade.

The obvious answer is to send it to Benchmade and have them look at it.

It almost sounds like you are describing a lengthwise fault in the steel. Its fairly rare, but strange things do come out of steel mills.

The best I can figure from your post, which I found very difficult to follow, is that maybe its a laminated blade and maybe the laminates did not weld completely. Give the vendor a call.

Sounds like your trying to say theres sort of a groove running the length of the cutting edge?

Thats odd. I'm 75% sure that a mini reflex has an ATS34 blade(think it came out before the new supersteels got popular), so no lamination.

First off, do you know what kind of coating the blade has. on a benchmade I'm guessing its BT2, which is mostly teflon and probably wouldn't delaminate and come away in a sheet (forming an extra burr on the edge)
A TiNi coated blade might do that though. Don't really know.

Second. Have you used the stone on both sides? If not try it, you might just have some sort of really gnarly wire edge going on (doubtful, but its hard to get an idea of exactly what your dealing with)

well i'm pretty sure it's has the teflon coating.
it's really weird. i own quite a few knives and i have never encountered anything like it. i used to get i wire edge when i first started honing but this is not a wire edge. and the are 2 sepperate groves.
