Is my new Benchmade 940 defective?

I finally purchased a Benchmade 940 Osborne Design Knife and was very excited to receive it. However, when I open the knife the bar or pin that stops the blade moves off center. I believe this is called the stop pin? Once the blade is locked in place the pin is no longer perpendicular to the two sides of the handle, but is angled slightly on one side. So instead of | it looks more like \. I've never owned or handled a knife of this design so I'm not sure what is correct, but it seems odd to me. Is this normal behavior for the pin or is my new Benchmade 940 defective? :ambivalence: Thank you.

Does the blade have any play when locked open? None of my BM 94x's have had the stop pin move like this, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem if it doesn't affect the function of the knife. Either way, though, you can send it in to Benchmade and they'll fix it. Their customer service is very good when it comes to defects and repairs.

Can you post a pic?

Mine certainly doesn't have this issue:

Tsujigiri: very slight blade play. Thank you for the reply. Good to hear Benchmade's customer service is good. This is my first Benchmade so I'm a bit disappointed out of box.
Dekz: thank you for taking the time to share a photograph of your 940.

My knife definitely seems defective. It almost looks like the pin was cut a little too short or something. Sad. I was very excited to get it, and it feels even more balanced than I imagined. :(

I think I'm going to contact the seller and see if they will replace it first since that is how it was out of box. Otherwise I guess I will be sending it to Benchmade. Thank you all for confirming the issue for me.

It looks like your pivot is very loose and is causing that, not the stop pin itself or a true "defect". It was just assembled incorrectly.

Notice the gap on your knife, between the black and handle scales? Compare that to Dekz's 940 and you can see that you have much more of a gap there.

Personally I'd just loosen the pivot a bit more, get the stop pin lined up in the holes of the frame, which should leave a very loose pivot, but your handles should have less of a gap then, and tighten up the blade pivot.

Or go with your plan and contact the seller, but after seeing that pic I really do think its just a minor assembly snafu.

Ya I think 5 minutes with a torx driver will probably fix it right up.

Wow that is way off. Either the stop pin's hole is drilled incorrectly, or as EricV said it was just put together badly or loosened too much. If you have Torx T6 and T8 bits you'll be able to make any adjustments you need on the knife. Just in case you don't have Torx bits, let me recommend that you get a set of Wiha's. Many of them are pretty low-priced, but they're quality tools with hardened steel and precision manufacturing. Before I knew about Wihas, I blew through a couple of hardware store Torx sets that either didn't fit the screws because they were too imprecise, or crumbled after moderate use because they weren't hardened. You'll save yourself trouble and money if you get a good set to start with.
