Is my new EDC 154CM?

Just received my new EDC from an online distributor. Before the purchase I specifically requested 154CM. After he confirmed he could get it, I ordered one, again stating 154CM in the order. Received the EDC today (jeez what a great knive for the money, will have to get a few more for my friends), but the blade is not marked 154CM. Is it 420HC? I have also read that the EDC was made in either D2 or M2, are these still available? If mine is indeed 420HC should I return it for a 154CM? Or is there really that much difference.

My 154CM blade is marked "154CM" and I purchased it recently. I can't be sure that all of the blades are marked like that.

There is a bit of difference between 154CM and 420HC. 154CM will hold its edge longer by a fair margin. However, the 420HC is much better if you are working around a corrosive environment (water, saltwater, etc.), and the edge holding is pretty good. 420HC is the same thing that Buck has been using for years, but Camillus uses their own heat treat, so the edge-holding could be better (or worse, I suppose). I am guessing that all 154CM blades were marked as such, as my D2 is, as well as my Talonite version. They want to advertise that it is a premium steel, not keep it a secret.

Yes, they are made in D2 and are available exclusively at www.agrussell.com. Costs significantly more than either the 420HC or the 154CM ($89.95, IIRC), but IMO well worth it. The Talonite version, BTW, is available from www.knifecenter.com, www.knifeoutlet.com (pretty sure), www.1sks.com, and probably a few others. The D2 version definitely is worth the extra money. My jury's still out on whether the Talonite version is actually worth the approximate double the price of the D2.

My EDC is also marked 154CM. Is there any notation on the box?
Perhaps we will hear from the good folks at Camillus about this.
Cheers,
Gord.

Randman,
I'm sorry, but it sounds like you got an EDC with a regular 420HC blade. If the blade is 154cm, its marked, 154cm. The D2 EDC's were only made for, or sold through, AG Russell, and they are marked accordingly. If you contact whomever you bought the knife from, and they can't arrange an exchange, grop me an email @

wfennell@rjsonline.net

and I'll see what I can do to help:)

Thanks for being a customer!

Thanks Will,

Not going to return it, will give it to my Dad or a friend. Ordered a 154CM version yesterday from 1SKS. Won't be ordering anymore from the previous distributor as this is the second time I've had a problem with them. Love the design of the EDC, wish the Talonite version was just a bit less expensive, but will probably end up with one someday.

You know, there is a section here on Bladeforums called "The Good,The Bad, The Ugly" that is the place to: (1) do a search to find out if others have had problems with a particular dealer, before making a guinea pig of yourself; (2) post information regarding experiences such as this to warn others of possible problems. I know I certainly would appreciate knowing who told you they could/would get you a 154CM EDC, then sold you a 420HC version. I don't like bait&switch tactics.
