Is my OVB#2 handle messed up?

I got my OVB#2 a couple of weeks ago and at first look it was ok. Held it out, grind was good, well balanced,sharp.... At closer look of the handles and I started noticing crack in my handle. I counted somewhere in the area of 10-12 very noticable, multidirectional cracks in the handle. I could stick the tip of a knife blade in some of them. My first instinct was to get on the forum and ask but instead I called Camillus and was told to send the knife back for repair/handle replacement. I mailed it in straight away. Let me say that everyone that I talked with was very nice and willing.......... I got a call today and was told that this was normal. This is unstabalized wood and that this is the normal. I thought this was "Our Very Best". I'm in a delima whether to keep the knife or get a refund. I would like to have all of the OVB's,I don't want to miss one,but I just don't know!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well enough of this. Has anyone else had this problem? Please describe you OVB#2 handles. I'm suppose to let them know tomorrow. PLEASE HELP!.!.!.!.

3nails,
I know exactly what you are talking about. I've inquired about the same thing for some of my customers. The response was the same. Basically, Desert Ironwood is so hard that it is virtually impossible to stabilize. Therefore, "minor" cracks or blems are going to be normal. Given the species of wood and all, the appearance and design far outweigh the voids in the handles. My take is it is a "keeper". IMHO :)

Yes, this is very common with Desert Ironwood, more so in the top grades with more burls like on the OVB's. When custom makers run into this they simply fill it with a high penatrating superglue to fill it in to seal it and lightly sand it off.
Desert ironwood is so dense that is will not stabalize. Cheryl is right on the money with that. No problem with it not being sealed. Water will not bother it one way or the other. Not a problem with shrinkage either, all in all the handle is not bother and will remain in the shape it is currently in.Hope this sheds some light.

Thank you Mr. Fisk and CherylR, I learn something new every day. A keeper she'll be. I would like to say Thanks to Michelle at Camillus for her help and handling in this matter. She was willing to do whatever it took to make it right. Now I have to go polish my shoes while I wait for the return of my OVB :footinmou

Thanks Dean

Dean,
Don't forget that you can do this too! I have some Ironwood that I have done it on and it is simple and works great!

Well #150 is safely back home again. Let me say the knife is great. The edge is perfect from end to end. Feels great in the hand and is very sharp. I just have to get use to this Ironwood. When I hold it out it is beautiful but I just got to ponder on them cracks for a while.

Jason, if I get up the nerve I may try it. How would this affect the collectability of the knife? For now I'll just admire and ponder it!!!

So what's the next OVB going to BE?

Unfortunately I cannot tell ya that for sure.:( If ya do it with a thin superglue and use a 1000 grit or higher wet/dry paper, it will look awesome!!

Hrmm, interesting, can anything be done that would minimize the separation, aside from a climate controlled room that it never leaves :P
