I recently purchased a Spyderco Urban off of eBay and I got a really good deal... so it makes me think that it mIay be counterfeit. I've looked at a lot of stock photos and I found a few differences.. But I'm not sure if those are just variances in your manufacturing. The barcode on the box is a sticker. The torx screws have lines extending off the star points. I don't know if that's a thing. Is there any way you can use these pictures to help me determine if this is counterfeit or not?? Thank you so much... I sent all the pictures to Spyderco and asked for their help as well. I haven't heard back from them yet.

You bought it off eBay? :(

Yeah, it's probably a fake. :(

NEVER buy any popular brand or model knife off eBay!
Only buy from a reputable online dealer if you cannot buy from a knife shop locally.

There is a reason eBay may have the lower price (don't forget to add shipping to the price. Some reputable online retailers have free shipping on orders over $50 or $75.) The most likely reason is the item is a fake, or at best a misrepresented factory second.

Never buy anything from an eBay seller who's photos are fuzzy or out of focus. That seller is hiding something.

Not everything on Ebay is fake or a bad deal.

I sell knives on ebay from time to time. I have never sold a fake; everything is authentic. I always describe the condition as accurately as possible if it is not brand new. I always state the exact shipping cost. I never sell factory seconds. I almost always sell for less than online dealers, but all costs are out front. with 700+ deals I have never had anything but positive feedback.

I've bought more than a few knives on ebay, all genuine. Good pictures and a good reputation go a long way, as well as a good return policy and buyer protection. You have to be smart, but it's really not that hard. And if you get an exclusive or sprint run model they usually aren't faked so that's a pretty safe bet. Although the price is usually overly inflated so there's that...

If something is rare, limited or no longer available you have to expect to pay more. Even if the seller does not mark it up the bidding probably will.

Got my first Spyderco off the bay, it is authentic, but I buy straight from Golden now. The Bay is the source for China to unload there counterfeit whatever, as they duplicate everything from handbags to hay hooks. Caveat Emptor

Unfortunately, quality manufacturers such as Benchmade, Spyderco, and ZT are competing with Chinese manufacturers that like to steal designs. One of my co-workers recently bought a fake ZT and a Benchmade Bugout. They were very well made, but being a knife aficionado, it still irked me knowing that those things were fakes. He bought them knowing that they were fakes, so I didn’t trash talk his knives. Personally, I would rather spend 30 dollars on a low end Gerber, than a high quality knife made by a company that steals designs from a reputable manufacturer.

Knifemakers should do what Rolex does. They have contracted agents who look for conterfeit copies and obtain court orders to confiscate and / or destroy them. I think they have to have the Rolex name brand and or logo on them to be considered counterfeit. I saw a tv show where one of these agents went to a street vendor selling these fake Rolex watches and he had a Police Officer with him. He took each watch and smashed them on the curb with a ball peen hammer right in front of the seller. It was pretty funny watching this guy squirm as he did it.

Watch out for knives on wish dot com especially. They look like the real thing but the $7 price tag kinda gives them away.

Fake knives may look like the real deal and their fit and finish might be OK but they use inferior steels. That alone is sufficient for me to dismiss them.

Hi BootsyCalico, RattlerSix,

Welcome to our forum.

Hey Vjb.knife,

We have 3 attorneys in Beijing and a regular legal team in the US hunting counterfeits. It is a problem for all US manufacturers. Especially when many, like your friend, know they are buying a counterfeit.

Hi Sal,
That is good to hear. I am not an attorney but if you ever need someone with a grinder and a big hammer I would be happy to tag along.
