Is my Yojimbo a gravity knife?

So i was messing around with my new spyderco yojimbo this evening, and i realized that with a flick of my wrist i can open the knife. (I dont make contact with the blade at all) I tried the same thing with several other knives and my CRKT Ryan will do it too. So will my kershaw vapor.
Does this mean that they're "gravity knives" and therefore illegal to carry?

Yes and no. A real gravity knife is held shut by a latch, and the blade falls open by gravity alone when the latch is released. So your knife is not a gravity knife per se. However, try finding a policeman that knows what a real gravity knife is, or for that matter , try finding one that cares. As far as most are concerned, if you can open the blade with a simple wrist snap, it is a gravity knife. I would suggest tightening the pivot screw a little to prevent possible problems with the law.

Oh ok. I wasnt real sure what a gravity knife was i guess.

On a side note.... I read somewhere that the 'carson flipper' was only legal because your came in contact with the blade when you opened it. I guess some one tried to argue that it was a switch blade...

I haven't found many knives at all that I can't flick open with my wrist. Many take more effort, but honestly I can't remember any that I couldn't after I tried a few times and found the right motion for the particular knife. Then again I have the basic technique down pat. Try it with any knife you find, hold it tight and try to throw it like a frisbee. It will open right up. I seriously doubt that this could/would cause a problem with the law, because you can go into any store out there and flick open at least 75% of their stock without modifying or changing anything about the knife.

New York just arrested a bunch of knife dealers for selling flickable knives. Worst part is they hit all local dealers and left the corperations alone. I really doubt such nazis would have any problem arresting a citizen for the same thing. Check with your local leo's if you can. Alot of local knife laws seem to give the LEO the decision on what is "legal". This of course makes no sense and is a mockery of our legal system.
