Just got a user knife in the mail with "patina" that looked decent in the sales ad... But now that I have it it looks a lot more like rust to me. Can patina be reddish or orangeish?
forced ones are usually its a greyish or blackish color. sometimes natural ones can be with various colors depending on what was cut. i have a nasty vine here that turns carbon steel a purple color.
I'll try tomorrow, I couldn't get my phone camera to focus right. It is lighter/faded on the blade spine and darker on the handle, but clearly red/orange tinted, that's why I figure it's rust. The face of the blade has a more black/grey that I think is actual patina.
If you're cutting meats and certain plants patina can take on a rainbow effect. I've had some knives that take a orangish/redish patina, but it's mixed with other colors. That is to say that there are other colors around it. It's impossible to say for certain without seeing pictures, but just being red or orange doesn't necessarily mean bad rust in my opinion.
"Patina" IS rust. It's just usually controlled, and not active rust. Active rust can usually be removed by gently scrubbing with 0000 steel wool. Oil afterwards.
