Hello guys,

I'be been meaning to ask this question for a while now but never did so, as the title says,
is the s30v the new bg-42 on CRks?
I think you all know what I mean:)
All the sebenzas I see for sale now are in s35vn so does this mean that the former ones will go up in value like the ones in bg-42?

Thanks:)

I would say yes, probably. Whenever a manufacturer of a well-loved item makes a change, there always seems to be a nostalgia for the item made before the change. You see this with guns all the time. Pre-lock Smith & Wessons, series 70 Colts, stamped slide Sigs etc. all command a premium over more recent, "updated" offerings from collectors. Whether these are actually any better than more recent products is difficult to say.

There are a lot of S30V CRKs out there, it should take a while before their prices rise significantly. But rise they will. Supply has ended, and demand will likely increase over time.

We knife and gun guys tend to be crotchety old men who like things "the way they used to be, damn it."

Well, that is certainly true! However, my answer to the OP is no, S30V really isn't the new BG-42. BG-42 was a completely different steel, run several points higher on the Rc scale, and at least IME/IMO has much greater edge retention (but is a lot more time-consuming to sharpen back up if you let it get dull). S30V and S35VN shouldn't, and IME/IMO don't, perform much differently cutting or being sharpened. There was an extended and somewhat heated discussion about one of the S35VN reviews on another forum. I guess I'd just say that you need to put that review in the context of other reviews before concluding that there's anything wrong with S35VN, other than perhaps the fact that from a user's perspective it doesn't advance the ball much relative to S30V.

I'd say no because S35VN is so closely related to S30V and is nothing but a minor upgrade. Kinda like software version 1.0 and 1.1

Id have to disagree, I have owned both the s30v and s35vn and much prefer the s30v over the s35vn. Its a big difference. S30v gets sharper IMO and holds it longer. S35vn is not crap steel in any way, I just much prefer the s30v over it.

IMO, 10 years from now, anything CRK made with S30V will have exactly the same WOW factor as BG42 does now.

Of course, this is just my opinion:)

I've had the exact opposite experience. IME the S35Vn holds its edge longer than does the S30v blade steel. I've used the S30V blade steel for longer, and have been pleased with its performance, but anecdotal evidence suggests to me that the S35v stays sharper, longer. Just my experience anyway, and I'm pleased to own CRKs with either steel.

thats the beauty of these forums everyone has different experiences and if it works for you awesome. If it helps though I like s30v but I carry the S35vn every day expecially now that I know my s30v sebenzas are gonna go up in value.... Have a good one :)

Chris was involved in the development of S30V. This was probably a factor in dropping the BG42 which is not a powdered steel and therefore will not hold as much Vanadium.

It's hard to predict the future. If CRK goes to, say, M390 @ 61Rc in 2013, I'd predict that S30V and S35VN blades would take a serious, err, cut ;) in price.

I've read also that there were supply problems with BG42 which prompted the development and subsequent switch to S30V.
