Is s35vn being discontinued?

Ive recently been trying to get some s35vv in the 0.12 thickness range, and it seems like everyone is basically out of the steel except for really thick pieces. S45vn is much more available, but of course more expensive.

Is this a temporary supply issue, or is cpm phasing out s35vn?

I have not heard anything about it being phased out. In the past CPM-154 has been more popular with custom makers than the S-series steels. As you noted maybe some of the suppliers decided to put in an order on S45VN instead rather than buying both.

Thanks larrin. I might need to decide to go with cpn154 for my stainless after all…

Curiously, i logged into the usa knifemakers site yesterday, and looks like they just yesterday posted a new supply of s35vn in several thicknesses i need (which they did not have earlier in the week when i was looking 😔). Im now several hundred dollars poorer 😔). Im very fortunate that their location is about a 50 minute drive away from me. Too cold - dont feel like driving, but because of location i do get next day delivery with ups 😊

From CPM S30VN you jump to CPM154 ? Why not CPM S30V ?
Between CPM S35VN and CPM S30V I chose S30V ...............
Just asking , I read that you found VN ............

No real reason - other than there are WAY too many steels to try to try them all. About a year ago i decided i wanted to settle on using only two: a non stainless and a stainless. I quickly settled on 26c3 for non stainless (high hardness, and i like the way it works when manipulating it), and one stainless. For a number of reasons i decided to try either 154 or s35vn. I like the way both of them work in the shop, but settled on s35vn for no strong reason other than it was a newer (and maybe more advanced?) formulation. I just dont want to get caught up in "try this steel, try that steel, .... ooh - here is another new one i gotta try". Almost all of the knives i make are kitchen knives, and so most of the performance criteria are pretty well known and thought to be met with existing steels...
