I heard that the steel is known by both of these names, is this true??

Thanks!

Jeff

In a word, YES

The name was changed to distinguish 420V from other 420 steels which are not even in the same class. 440V is now called S60V and 420V is now S90V. The V is for vanadium.

I also heard that this is the toughest steel out there. This is probably an opinion question, but what do you all think?

Answer #1: Yes

Answer #2: Yes

Answer #3: All depends on where you stand or your perspective on life ?

Answer #4: Yes

The real question(s). . . Do you want a blade made of S90V ? More importantly, can your wallet (or purse) afford one ?

Man. . .Aaaaahhhhhhhh. . .too many questions on a Friday night !

Toughest, no. Low alloy steels are tougher, but S90V is quite tough compared to other high alloy tool steels. It is very good knife blade steel, particularly for small stain resistant blades.
