I am currently looking for a sharpening system and wondered if the meyerco sharpen-it was any good, and if not what would be a good system under $40-$30?

For serrated knives it might be workable, since it has the tapered rod. I used a DMT tapered rod for serrations until I got the Sharpmaker. I dont know about the wheel hones on the Sharpen-It. I had a bad experience w/ wheel/disk sharpeners and havent tried any since. The Spyderco Sharpmaker can be found some places for ~$45. A course/fine combo bench stone is also good for under $30. I recommend Norton Course and Fine India if you can find them. You can make some simple wooden angle guides like the ones posted here earlier. They are basically just a 4x4 piece of wood cut at the angle you want and then screwed to a base so its vertical. Then just lean the stone against it and sharpen away. I usually do 20-40 strokes on one side then the other, depending on how dull the knife is for how many strokes I use. Some will say that you must use one side only until a burr forms, then change. I then use very light strokes alternating at a higher angle to remove any burr that formed. I do this free hand, but you can make another base at a higher angle and just turn it around. It should only be about 10 strokes per side, alternating, to remove all but the most stubborn burr.
