I cannot seem to find a datasheet, or any relevant information on google. The only thing that seems to come up are vintage cans for sale. On the bottle itself it says nothing wether it is food safe or not.

So I hope anyone here has any information wether Shells Handy Oil (clear bottle) is food safe.

Cheers

There is nothing about it that would indicate, it's intended to be food safe. A petroleum based oil is what it is. Food safe oils would be marked and sold as such.
(I have to wonder, why you posted this in General Knife discussion )

Sorry `bout that. I guess it belongs in the Maintenance section. On the bottle it says something along the lines of "appliable everywhere in the houshold." It doesn`t say that it is petroleum based either, but I can guess it is.

As Jill said, it is petroleum based. That said, I am assuming you are asking because you want to use it as a lubricant for the pivot on a knife or something, in which case we are talking a few drops, and I don't think that would be to harmful if you were to use the knife to cut food once in a while. I would be more concerned with food contamination from not being able to remove it all from the knife than I would the actual oil.

Here is an MSDS sheet for Chevron Handy Oil. They're from the same era, and I would guess contain probably very similar ingredients.

In general, I'd say it's quite safe. Pharmacy-grade USP mineral oil it is not, but there seem to be no toxic components and is a minor irritant at the most. I wouldn't drink the entire bottle, but use on knife that might transfer miniscule amounts to food I would have no problem with.
