Is Spyderco using a new lube along the detent track?

Cleaning out my M390 Military I noticed it shines differently on one side. From the position, I suspect it's to make the detent ball slide along a little slicker. Maybe I'm wrong, and it's not lube at all, but it looks like dry-on lube to me.

Sorry for the quality. I had to play with the light and angling the blade to try to get it to show up

Anyone else noticed this on your recently-made knife?

Well, it doesn't wipe or scrub away, and it isn't the blade's finish. In some angles/lights it looks shinier than the rest of the blade, others it looks white/milky. When I put Boeshield T9 on a knife, that's basically what it looks like dry.

Your talking about the lighter silver area?

Yeah, the light silver area, i.e., the part that includes the detent track mark.

Here are a few other pictures. I'm convinced it is lube. That area has the least amount of wear from the washer, despite that the same area on the opposite side has the highest amount of wear from the washer.

The other side shows the most wear on the bottom half, the half closest to the choil, which is where the discoloration and less wear is on the other side:

It just looks to me more finely finished or polished in that area.Never heard or seen any lube that can't be cleaned off.

that.

it's just polished, at least that's all i can see from the pictures. anyway polishing this area just has the same effect as lubing.

Yup, just polished more in that area. I did that to my Persistence when I got it, made it real slick to open.

Ok then, when did Spyderco start polishing that area? This is my first one like that and also my newest-made.

Yep, got it straight from KW. It was from the second batch, the 59 that came up for sale recently.

My guess is that they polished the pivot area on all of the M390 militaries to help keep the rust at bay. The pivot area holds the most amount of moisture and grime so it tends to rust pretty quickly if not cleaned regularly.

That would make sense if it is on both sides, but it's only on one, and also it doesn't include all of the washer area on the side it is on, ending just above the pivot pin hole.

Why on Earth would anyone polish such a small area on a knife that happens to have a stainless steel blade for the purpose of rust inhibition?
