How can that be? I've used this fine piece of steel, but truth be told, she's enjoyed a sheltered existence. Not a workhorse, nor a carry piece, she hasn't even left the house. She's been kept at home to cut the occasional piece of cheese or fruit. She's never even gotten wet except for the few times I've washed her blade. In each case she was immediately and thoroughly dried. Mostly she's taken out to be gazed at and admired.

Despite that care, rust has formed on the inside of the backspring. Oh well...all things return to dust. Now that I have that out of the way I can drop her in my pocket and carry and use her the way she should be used.

Even in a safe, dry environment a little shot of WD down there and wipe clean won't hurt.

I'm not sure how that happens but I see it all the time (not on my knives).

It may have something to do with the inside of the knife having a rougher finish thus leaving the steel more subsceptible to rust, and it's also harder to wipe down in that location.

Rust never sleeps.

And it never ends...

With knives I use on fruits, foods etc after drying the blade by wiping, I leave the knife open afterwards. This helps cut down on 'internal rot':D condensation etc. As others have noted, the insides of most knives are rough finish aka rust magnets:D add brass to the equation as well and you've got toxic algae, sorry verdigris, on your hands-literally ;)

It's obvious that knife is trashed... you should toss it. I will PM you with my address... send it to me, and I'll see it's properly disposed.

In case anyone takes me too seriously, my original post was made tongue-in-cheek. After I noticed the black spots, I immediately dropped the knife in my pocket. Bare! After banging against my keys she now has a few marks that weren't there this morning. Peppering and micro scratches aside, she is none the worse for wear.
