Opinions please. Is the Battle Rat twice the knife (or more) than the RTAK or Becker 9?? Considering the difference in price, should it be, or should we take into consideration diminishing returns?

The rule of diminishing returns applies with anything, as many Sebenza aficianados will tell you, a Sebenza isn't necessarily "as good as" 4 AFCKs or Spydie Militaries or whatever, but it does have a certain level of quality that others cannot touch.

I however cannot speak as to the quality of the Battlerat, I only assume this to be so.

I will, however, mention that the Becker line is fantastic, and you will be simply shocked at the quality you get for the price. I own a 7 right now that I've put through some relatively serious abuse, which it has handled with true gusto, planning on a 9 in the future sometime (when I get in the mood for a massive fixed blade).

No. I LOVE my 2 Camillus/Becker knives, and there is just no way that the Battle RAT can be better...Even at twice the price!.:).

John,

I own both a Battle Rat and the RTAK. Both are very good knives but with different niches. The BR is a heavy bladed knife more suitable for chopping and heavy use. The RTAK is more akin to being a short machete of sorts. Thinner blade stock with a full flat grind, just doesn't chop with the BR without sticking. Cuts circles around it however in light brush and vegetation. I would put the Becker between the two and more of an all around blade. For what I use a knife for, the RTAK sees far more real world use.

For the price of the BR you could own both the RTAK and the BK9 and pretty much have your bases covered.

While I like the Rat lines, I had an opportunity to compare the Battle Rat and the RTAK. I like the machete like aspect of the RTAK, it goes mush easier through thick bone, and while the Battle Rat can do the same, I just choose to carry light. The B-Rat more or less cut then crunched through the pig leg bone I was working on. The Battle Rat is more of a "come what may" knife, and the RTAK is more like a light brush and vegetation knife. Choose whatever one will suit you.:)

I don't own the more inexpensive knives, but I feel my Battle Rat was worth every penny!

I was originally looking at a Busse battle Mistress, so the Swamp Rat saved me a fortune!

Lets see…..
For the price of a Battle Rat, I can get a BK&T Bowie and a BK&T Brute for chopping, or instead I could get a RTAK and a Granfors Bruks Wildlife Hatchet…or a BK&T C/U7, a Wildlife Hatchet (or a BK&T Patrol machete), a Swiss Army, and a Gerber Sport saw ( or a GI Machete)…hmmm……decisions decisions. :)
