Is the Buck 55 being discontinued?

Hey there Buck Gurus.

I believe this is the first thread I've started on Blade Forums, as far as I can remember. Anyway, I've always liked the Buck 55 and I heard a rumor from a rather dubious source that it might be going away. If so, I figure I better get one while I can. If not, I had probably better get one anyway :). I was reminded of the 55 when I was browsing through Copper & Clads website. That is a very dangerous place to go if you are married and have a credit card. You might not even have to be married.

Anyone know if this is true? (the buck 55 being discontinued, not being married :).

Thanks and regards

Made me look. It is in the 2017 Catalog and also on the Buck website. I would say that is a good indication it is not soon to leave.

I have this irrational affliction that I am never in a hurry to acquire a knife I want while it's available then scramble when it's not...

Thanks DeSotoSky, I just missed it in the catalog. I've wanted one for a long time, and I guess I just got jumpy :)

Man, there sure is a lot of wisdom here. Never even thought about that truck!
OK, I will see about sneaking into town later today and stopping in at that new gun shop.
I'm pretty sure they have one I can buy.

I've purchased a 55 and love the styling to have it resemble a 110. My issue with it is the thin frame. It's not Bucks problem but mine as my hands have some arthritis and stiff joints, making it a bit difficult for me to hold well comfortably.

One of the reasons I like the 703. Anyway, I just thought I'd bring it up in case you've similar issues, as it is a very thin model but really carries well in your pocket. Hardly feel it's in there.

Fortunately I don't have arthritis (yet). I like the 55 because it is thin - it doesn't make a bulge my dress pants. But I wish the clip point was less "clipped", that tiny blade seems like it would be easy to lose a tip.

Well, I went into town today a 1 hour round trip. My folks at the gun store weren't there, but I'll try again tomorrow. You all wouldn't believe the amount of trucks on the road! Not even counting mine. The wife was a running around with her Dodge today too. Be careful out there!

I was thinking about getting the Buck 110 LT (the one with the nylon handle) last week, but then I started thinking of the Buck 55. I can't buy both, already have 2 110s, and don't have a 55, so I'm thinking about getting that instead...

Thanks for that comparison! Too bad the 55 isn't a drop point (although I suppose that would be a Prince?), but I really like the rounded bolsters. I'm tempted to get the LT but the nylon looks a bit too cheap, although I'm sure it does the job and looks a lot thinner and lighter. I'm sure I'll make an impulsive buy shortly.

As for the thickness of the LT, it measures roughly the same as the brass bolster 110. The nylon handle feels very strong and at less than half the weight of the brass, it feels very nice in the hand. Shown is the 55 for comparison.

Well I went to the store to buy yesterday. They didn't have a Prince and the Buck 55 just isn't what I need right now (ie another clip point). The store inventory said there were two Buck 110 LTs around but after waiting 10-15 minutes, they couldn't find any of them! So I left empty handed and a little disappointed, but also a little relieved that I was spared an impulse buy or two.

Then I saw the Buck Woodsman is on sale for $30. I don't need another clip point, but $30 is hard to pass up... I may be heading back tomorrow.

Went to another store and after another 10-15 min wait they tracked it down: the two knives just arrived last night and were somewhere in the back. I bought one but was on my way to work, so I my first impression is based on handling it in the car.

Man is this thing light! The handle feels cheap to me, but the texture is nice and it does have a utilitarian vibe that suits me well. Did I mention it is crazy light compared to the classic 110?? Opening and locking it produces a very satisfying snap, as others have mentioned. Blade is razor sharp, centered, but when open there is just enough side-to-side and up-and-down play to be disappointing. Is it just me or does the blade have a different texture/color/appearance compared to the classic 110?

Overall I'm happy with this impulsive buy, it was worth driving to three different stores, and this is after playing with it for only 5 min.

I did stare at the Buck Woodsman, on sale for $30, for a few minutes while waiting for the staff to track down the 110 LT... but I resisted.

Nice comparison pic

Its shows exactly why I've been torn since I first saw the 55.

Is supposed to be a scaled down 110 so why is the Choil the same size? It totally breaks it for me

Good observation Corso. I never noticed how big the choil is on the 55 relative to it's handle size. Maybe some wasted real estate on the blade? By the way, I've heard the 55 was actually patterned after the, now discontinued, 111. The bolsters match the wood-scaled 111 and a more accurate name for the little guy might have been "The 55.5". :)
