would it be too intimidating if pulled out in public? i'm considering either the heat or the EDC but not sure if the heat is too long, and not sure if the EDC is long enough.
i don't really like the blade shape, stud location, and lack of flipper(s) on the EDC, but do like the higher quality steel. i think it probably wouldn't be able to be used in self defense though, if the situation ever arises (too short & slow deployment)

i forgot to ask this too: i would remove the robo assist from the heat... can it still be opened pretty fast with just a wrist flick? (like the cuda maxx, for example)

Only if the public is used to the sound of a rapidly deploying lock-blade snapping home. :o

This folder is for the "it's legal and I don't give a fat-rat's-ass what the sheeple think" type of knife-knut. If your afraid of offending the little sheeple, get something a bit more low-key in the area of deployment. Just my humble little opinion, mind you... :D

It has an adjustable pivot so I'm fairly certain it would open easily sans Robo-Assist.

:D of course. i almost always open my current knife without snapping it anyway

cdl,
Just out of curiousity, have you held and examined a "Heat" yet?

I ask because, IMO, it's one of the more powerful assisted openers I've seen and it opens with a good deal of authority. First time I tried mine at the shop, it almost launched out of my unsuspecting paw.  :D

It's a great attention getter and anyone in your vicinity will notice when it gets deployed. I'm not saying it opens so fast it comes with it's own sonic boom, but folks do notice when it gets opened. If your looking for a low key opening knife, you might wanna extend your search parameters a bit and check out Benchmade's new assisted opening knife, which for the life of me I can't remember the name of right now. Anyway, it gives you the option of removing the assist if you want a manual only opening folder.

as i mentioned, i would definately take out the robo spring no matter what. i don't need that nor do i want it to be considered a switchblade.

i haven't handled either knives. i know there has been a lot of discussion on the EDC but the heat doesn't seem to have a lot of feedback yet. i might get the EDC but i'm just afraid it might be *too* small.

There is always the unassisted dominator if you can shell out 180$. The sizzle I have KICKS HARD. It was stiff at first and I nearly shot it into Darrel Ralphs table

My son's heat opens much quicker and kicks harder than my Dominator. The manual conversion is very simple and takes less than a minute with the tool provided with the knife. It can still be opened quickly with the flipper and a flick of the wrist in manual mode. Sheeple friendly? It kinda has a "tactical" look but it's not over the top.

The Heat is well made and well designed. I think it's a bargain. I haven't handled the Camillus EDC, though I have handled a larger Darrell Ralph version and it would probably make an excellent, well, EDC although I think you got it right about it not being practical for SD.

That's for sure! It is quite impressive for the price paid. I'm glad I picked one up. The AUS-8A blade seems to be well HT'ed too. Camillus did a great job on the execution of this folder.

I agree. It's more the sound of the blade snapping home and the rapidity of the opening blade that'll draw anxious looks from the timid. :(
