Is the Emerson rattle a thing of the past?

I remember reading several threads where people talked about their knife having a rattling noise. I think it had something to do with the ball detent. I'm thinking this problem was fixed because the last 4 Emerson knives I've purchased have no rattling noise whatsoever. I've purchased a cqc12, a cqc7 non wave, cqc7 wave, cqc8, and a Snubby. The 12 was manufactured in 2006 but the rest are 2008 or 2009.

Never had that problem. Only have them back to a specwar from 2001 though.

i havent ever had one do that but i do remember some posts about it IIRC, if it ever was a problem imho its not now............

oh, & IIRC it was the detent ball making the rattle.

I think it was the stop pin making the rattle guys and it was because it was just a bit short so it could move back and forth between the two sides. It was only noticed when the blade was not contacting the pin real good or not at all so its rare. I fixed a couple by inserting something under the scale to restrict the movement of the small pin. This could be anything from papper punch holes popped out with your punch to small washers.

If the detent balls got lose they'd have little retention and just fall out. I've seen a bigger problem with some Kabar D2 Tactical folders where their pins were so short in some cases that if the blade developed side to side play even slightly the pins could fall out. I've shown those before and after in my forum.

My new CQC-7 rattled. It was the stop-pin. A drop of, :D, WD-40 on each side of the pin stopped the rattle. My first CQC-7 rattled also.

Some don't make any noise but you can actually lift the blade off the pin and using a small needle nose pliers quite easily see that you can indeed slide the stop pin laterally back and forth between the liners. Most fit tight enough that the retention of the hole keeps them from being rattles but some come where the pin can actually move from the momentum of your movement of the folder in your hand during use and at certain times I guess they rattle. I had a SARK (a green one now that I think about it) that did this and it was a real rattle. That one was not exactly right and I actually replaced the stop pin entirely with a longer better fitting one.

Its like that now and then with pivot barrels. I may drill and ream a hole in a blade or body for a folder and grab a pin. Lets just say for example its a 3/16". Well if I actually try it some fit so tight that more reaming is needed and others slide right through almost sloppy yet they are still technically within tolerance to be considered 3/16th sizes. Its just that if you pull the micrometer out you note that there is a diff between them and its just enough to make one lose and slide easier than the other. I figure its the same with these mass produced bought or made in bulk stops used by manufacturers.

Here is one of those Kabars I've seen for the same thing.

I've replaced a stop pin in this model right here that was made by Kabar and at least four times that I can recall just off the top of my head. One just recently but I think this one is the only one I posted about. Kind of redundant to post multiples of this so I just documented the other ones in my log and shipped em home.

I used loctite, just a small drop on each end of that stop pin and it has held now for a month and luckily can't see any of the loctite at all.
Oh, I didn't take the knife apart for this, just did it carefully and used a very small amount.

I think anything that fills that small gap would do the job. My rattle was quite noticeable but stopped right away.

Only my first Emerson (non waved CQC-7) had the rattle and it either stopped by itself, or my ears have gone bad. It may be a thing of the past.

Yes, stop pin is the culprit. My 2-months old Snubby had it. A little drop of Goop glue on both ends of it did the trick. Now I'm deciding on a big-bladed Emerson and it'll pro'lly be the CQC-8. I've got big hands though, the Snubby just about fits, so I'm concerned about that.

My newly acquired Mini Commander did the same thing after tearing it down for adjustments and then reassembling. I'll take it down once more and try a method that has been mentioned here to resolve it. It's a minor annoyance, that can be easily fixed, I think.

it's the stop pin. just put a small piece of something there to fix it.
