Is the Griptilian blade too shiny?

From the videos/pictures I've seen, it looks like it would look scratchy really quickly, especially if you made a mistake while sharpening.

Opinions and experience?

Any knife will scratch if you if you slip during sharpening. The stone is harder than the steel. A polished blade is not any more prone to being scratched than a satin blade.
The blade in a Grip is not highly polished. It's satin. If you want a blade finish that will conceal light scratching, take a look at the Doug Ritter Griptilians. They have a stonewashed finish.

My opinion? Put your own finish on it if you don't like the factory one. It's not difficult at all for stonewash or brushed metal finishes.

I like the finish better than a stonewash. I also use my knives though. It's like a pair of boots - I HATE new boots. There's no character without scuffs and scratches! :D

A little sandpaper with some flitz, progressively going up to 2000grit will reshine your knife.

Not only that, but the reflections off the blade will give away your position to the enemy.

If scratches bug you that much, you really only have two options: 1) don't use it; 2) get a knife with a different finish.

I have one on the exchange that is coated if you want one that isn't shiny (or if you want a user to experiment on).

Hey Marc, I always thought that when you sharpen you scratch away the metal to form the apex? Isn't that just a matter of putting the scratches where you want 'em? ;)

Satin finished knives typically tend to be shiny, bead blasted blades tend to be more opaque. Using any knife will incur scratches on the surface, it's the trade off of separating matter into smaller pieces.

Yup! Rev nailed it also. If its a user, its gonna get scratched.

I suppose one could put masking tape on the blade up to the edge while sharpening.

Where's the like button? :D

They will definitely show scratches easily. I have a couple of marks on mine from use and slips while sharpening on a fine diamond stone. Its a user so I don't care, but you may.
