Is the hole for the thumb plate wave opener a potential failure point ?

Don't pry with your knives. It probably would have snapped regardless. Probably elsewhere though.

Of course not ! But in emergencies you may have to . Isn't that what "hard use " folders are all about ?
in an emergency, expect it to snap. But if that's all ya got, you might be lucky. I've seen many snapped Kai blades. Even snapped a blur myself with very little pressure. I was floored. Also zt have 62hrc 20cv...that's probably gonna snap pretty easy too. Kai will replace blades for a small cost which is a pro.

See how deep the hole is and the threads only go quarter way, so the hold is more than twice as deep as necessary and a potential weak point.

Couldn't they at least center the hole, looks real close to break out, and why is it so deep with CNC Machining. Very disappointing. Taiwan?

Yes ! Obvious once I understand the perspective . So this is more a QC issue than an inherent design or material problem . Makes me feel somewhat better !:)

The threaded hole on the broken knife is off center and too deep.

Even so, this wouldn't have happened if the user wasn't abusing the knife.

We can all see and admit to the flaws present in the photos a hole deeper than was needed and off center resulting in a blade with more weakness than it should be I will say that the off center is a machining and tolerance issue that is more difficult to consistently resolve but the depth seems like a design flaw. This isn't entirely unique to this knife any hole or cutout in a blade can and often will result in weak points and if that weak point is stressed it is more likely to fail and break. This shouldn't be an issue under normal knife use no matter how tough the knife is intended to be it is still a knife and not a pry tool. In a true emergency with no alternatives around hell yes use what you have to get the job done and if a blade breaks well who cares in a true emergency.
