Is the kerambit this year's neck knife?

What I mean is, anyone remember the buzz about neck knives about 2 years ago? Everyone had to have one, every manufacturer and custom maker had to offer one, or be seen as "behind the times". fast forward to now. There are neck knives being made, and some people still buy and use them, but the hype is all gone. lately every other thread has to do with kerambits (which is funny, since the basic design is possibly centuries old), and everyone and their brother is making one. neck knives were also seen as the best SD option for all these reasons A thru Z, and I see the kerambit following the same path, with specialized training by newly christened "experts".

Anyone else see this?

Yup...Seen this type of cycle several times. The karambit will be replaced by some other whiz-bang offering, and the cycle will repeat, agin...

folding titanium kerambits with neck sheaths, bead blast finish, chisel ground, BC1 coating in a camo pattern, world's strongest lock, with a flipper, hole, stud, sculpted G10/carbon fiber/micarta handle scales/bolsters/inserts, reversible pocket clip... and carried by every operator on the planet

Like thumb studs and pocket clips?
I don't buy what you're selling partner!:p :D

New or not, ideas always get a lot of talk and press when they hit the mainstream. Sure, the talk has subsided with neck knives but they're no less popular - people are just used to the idea now and most everybody's got one they like by now.

Karambits? Sure, because there are a bunch of new ones that just hit the market and people are starting to notice. Someday the talk will subside but a lot of people will still have them. They might be in a drawer somewhere like a toy that's lost it's novelty but the people who love them now won't love them less in two years.

I hardly think this series of "waves" is a fad the likes of clothing lines which go to Goodwill after it passes.

When was the last time you saw someone start a thread about thumbstuds or pocket clips or Axis locks? Or were those just "hype" or a passing fad?

Actually, I'm with fulloflead on this one. Neck knives are still plenty popular, there were lots of them at Blade. They just don't get as much press. The kerambit could slip off into the sunset though, time will tell.

I don't own a neck knife, but I can see where some people would find them very useful. The kerambit seems like a fun sort of knife gadget to me. Sort of like a balisong. Fun to play with and fool around with. But in terms of any everyday use, the kerambit seems a bit useless. The kerambit, by history and design is made for very specialized self defense. They are really not suitable as an EDC.

I dunno about the Karambit not being good for EDC. I use the hell outta my Emerson Karambit. That hooked blade is sweet for rippin open boxes , peeling oranges and apples , cutting the sheathing off of CAT5 cable as well as the daily can of Copenhagen :D

Emerson, Spyderco, Derespina knives, Keen Edge, karambit.com, TAD gear, Strider, etc.

I say Kerambit you say Karambit....

A fad? Yes and no.

I'm not a fan of neck knives but can see why many like them.

The ingredient missing in the Kerambit equation is there is no quality kerambit in a "reasonable" price range ($ 50 -$ 100). You have a choice between the POS Chinese $ 15 and the high end Emerson, Blade-Tech, Strider, and CKT knives at over $ 150.

It's the old Catch 22. CRKT, Camillus, Kershaw, etc. aren't going to develop a good quality bargain knife until there is a demand and there is no demand until people see a good quality bargain knife.

Another factor is that the spinning moves associated with some self defense use are dangerous to the user meaning extensive practice is required to get the most out of them.

I'd like to have one as a utility tool since I believe the short hawkbill legal even in Boston blades are very effective. However, I can't afford the buy a good one just to try it.

I have no idea what price range the Spyderco Kerambit will be.

love em or hate em , they are going to be here for awhile I believe...

how about a Mini Commander with a Karambit Blade ???

or a Karambit with a Mini Commander blade ???

karamder3.jpg

I swapped these 2 blades around the other night just for grins , both locked up fine , the Commander blade in the Karambit scales closed fine but had the cigar cutter effect.

The Karambit blade would not close all the way but could easily be modifed to do so .....

Two years ago most "experts" would have told you all the drawbacks to a hawkbill blade for self defense. Now it's the greatest thing since sliced bread....go figure.

Hey John, had to read your post twice, could've sworn that you wrote "cut the sheathing off of Cats."

Steve , It would work for that as well brudda !

How the heck you doing anyways ?

I am going to grab another Mini Comm and Karambit and do a permanent swap as soon as finance allow :D

The keen edge kerambit is $75, they just need to make more. Wish there was a number I could call, but I putmy e-mail addy on their list for both the kbit and the pukulan.

The kerambit thing is just a trend! It does have some advantages, but it is one of the hottest of trends among tactical knives right know.A few years ago, everything should have a chisel grind and with serrations, and now it´s the kerambit.I don´t have any neck knife, but if i should get one it would be clearly a basic blade design, the Fallkniven WM1,with a kydex sheath.

This is a strong knife that has a time less blade made of VG-10,and can for sure be used for self defense if the need arise, even though it does not have any oriental "fighting look" about it.I would never buy a kerambit neck knife anyway.
