Is the Koster spa open?

Hi Dan,

I received in trade a Koster that needs some TLC (there are scratches on the blade). Is the Koster spa open to have the primary bevels cleaned up and thinned just a bit? The previous owner said the scratches were from the kydex sheath, but it doesn't look like it to me. If you do not mind, let me know if I can send it in, or if I should wait til you are taking orders again.

Thanks,

Yes - I will gladly clean it up....won't take long...I can sneak it in while working on orders. Might take a couple days until I have that particular setup ready...but can definitely get it done. I usually charge $10 for a simple clean-up, refinishing...+s/h....if it's a huge knife....or has complicated needs...might need to go up. And I would need to see it first before agreeing to the price/work.

Let me know.

Dan

This is the knife in question. Is it possible that the sheath did this? I believe it is the one that came with it, but I am not sure.

The sheath, no...kydex can't by itself put on lasting scratches.
BUT, yes, it is very likely caused by junk inside the sheath.

I'll be sure to clean it out real good when it shows up.

That is not a hard fix - does involve me regrinding the hollow-grind at fine grit, which may affect the "K" logo....and might move the grind line up slightly....if you're willing to live with that -send 'er along. I'll be happy to do it!

Thanks!

hey guys, i was wondering, what kind of wood on the handle of this beautiful knife? also, dont want to get off subject, but when you were talking about moving the grind line higher, does this happen only if you regrind on the machine, or this happens whenever you sharpen, even on a stone?
thanks, hope you guys don't mind.

Only if I regrind the bevel...not from sharpening.

dczippo - if I grind if off, yes, I'll put one back on. If it just "lightens" it a bit...then I don't want to risk re-etching and missing. Make sense?

only if I do a regrind...just the nature of the beast.

This knife has a hollow grind - only sharpen the micro-bevel.

If all I have to do is clean-up...might get away with ust "lightening"
the "K" logo. If I have to regrind it to get the marks off...I may have to redo the logo. Won't know until I try it. *shrug*

The grind line should only move up slightly...as I'll probably only need 120 grit at most to get it cleaned up...hopefully only 400 grit.

I will take a look at the kydex sheath as well to see if something is causing it to catch and hold onto dust - thereby making the scratches.
