Is the Manix 2 (G-10) designed to be flicked open? Or does this cause too much damage

to the lock and/or pivot mechanism? I hadn't really thought about this until another member brought this up with regard to my question concerning safely flicking the knife open without cutting myself. Did Eric Glesser take this into consideration when designing the Manix 2 or would he advise against it due to the potential abuse factor?

Thanks.

I certainly hope flicking open a Manix is not considered abuse.

My Dark Blue Manix 2 flies out after I loosened the pivot ever so slightly.
As long as you don't give it much, or any, wrist action, I think it should be fine. But I'm not an expert.

Some people find a way to break anything and everything they touch. My opinion is the knife was designed primarily to cut stuff, and should be able to withstand some hard impacts, however how do we define "hard impacts"? No folder is indestructible, so let common sense be your guide.

Thanks. I really need to try loosening the pivot, but then again, this may encourage excessive flicking... :)

I'm referring more to the deployment of the blade than its intended use. But I hear you with regard to people that will try their damnedest to break something and then blame it on some sort of inherent defect with said item. I won't be using it to crowbar something open, needless to say.

Thank you for maintaining this resource, RevDevil. I really appreciate it...

I think he was implying that opening a knife hard is essentially an "impact" in and of itself. The manix should be able to handle a lot of opening and closing without any issue or damage....WITHIN REASON. if you are opening and closing it hundreds of times a day then yeah, metal parts will eventually wear. Also, I think what Rasco said has a lot of merit. To open the knife with a flick of the thumb creates a bit of an impact. To open with an extravagant flick of the wrist creates a much greater impact (and looks pretty ridiculous anyway IMO).

The manix is a very well built knife and if you choose to flick it open in a sane and controlled manner I can't see it being too big of a problem...even if you do it a little more than is absolutely necessary. If opening and closing your spyderco more than is absolutely necessary did damage then most of us would be in trouble. :D

Flick it open all you want, dude. It'll be fine. I middle-finger flick most of my Spydercos. PM2's, Manix's, GB, Sage, doesn't matter. It will hold up just find and will outlast you. Unless of course you're a tool and you do it 100's of times a day, every day, for months on end. But honestly, I can't ever see it being a problem.

Is wave opening (i.e. zip tie mod) harder or softer than finger flick? Compared to wrist flick it might be softer. Anyone has idea?

I suppose it depends on how much force you use to pull the knife from your pocket, but I imagine a "regular" pull would not be any different from a "regular" flick of the thumb.

Middle finger flick !? OK, I will google this and watch a demonstration : it is efficient , but it looks a little odd. And some members such as Surfingringo think that the wrist flick looks bad! The middle finger is stranger in my mind...

Thanks, Surfingringo. I have noticed that you always give good and sensible advice in your answers here. I think that the lady of the house would prefer that I not get too carried away with flicking knives open while at home anyway...

Thank you, Jibbles. I may just take you up on this...
